The allure of cutting the cable cord to save money may be losing its luster for some folks very soon.
Google’s YouTube confirmed speculative reports this week that its YouTube TV live OTT cable-channel streaming platform is getting a significant price hike to $72.99 per month, an $8 per month increase for its basic service package.
The new price goes into effect immediately for new subscribers, while current subscribers will see the change starting April 18th.
The company issued a tweet Thursday saying the increase was the result of the higher cost for content and an investment in service quality.
At the same time, the company said it will be reducing the surcharge fee for its add-on 4K resolution channel tier from $19.99 a month to $9.99 a month. That means that existing 4K subscribers will actually see a $2 savings from both the basic and 4K add-on combined after the price adjustments.

The YouTube TV live OTT cable-channel streaming service launched in 2017 for $35 a month.
The service offers one of the most comprehensive platforms for live sports streaming. It announced last year that it won the rights away from DirecTV to provide the NFL Sunday Ticket as another optional add-on (available game options from the service will also be offered for a fee through the regular YouTube channel).
However, the YouTube tweet Thursday said the YouTube TV base service subscription fee hike was forced by the higher cost of content overall and not “specifically due to our new football offerings.”
