Warner Brothers Discovery announced that “MAX” will be the name of the planned HBO Max and discovery+ combined premium Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) services that are set to launch May 23rd in the United States.
The Max streaming app will incorporate content from HBO Originals, Warner Bros films, Max Originals, the DC universe, the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, a large slate of kids content, as well as programs focused on food, home, reality, lifestyle and documentaries. The catalog will pull content from the libraries of networks including: HGTV, Food Network, Discovery Channel, TLC, ID and others.
In announcing the platform, JB Perrette, President & CEO, Global Streaming & Games, Warner Bros Discovery said, “This new brand signals an important change from two narrower products, HBO Max and discovery+, to our broader content offering and consumer proposition. While each product offered something for some people, Max will have a broad array of quality choices for everybody.”
Max will be available through three pricing tiers:
Max Ad-Lite: $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year
Providing streaming with ads for two simultaneous stream capability, Full HD 1080p resolution, no offline downloads, and 5.1 surround sound quality.
Max Ad Free: $15.99 per month or $149.99 per year
Providing two ad-free simultaneous streams, Full HD 1080p resolution, 30 offline downloads, and 5.1 surround sound quality
Max Ultimate Ad Free: $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year
Providing four ad-free simultaneous streams in up to 4K UHD resolution, 100 offline downloads, and Dolby Atmos surround sound quality.

Among the new original content available through the MAX platform will be newly announced titles from the Harry Potter series; a new comedy series evolving out of The Big Bang Theory; a new Game of Thrones prequel called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight”; a supernatural drama series based on The Conjuring films; Magnolia Network’s DYI series “The Hotel;” Discovery Channel’s “Survive the Raft;” a new presentation of “Peter & the Wolf” from Bono; Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty: The Anime”; Investigation Discovery’s “Lost Women of Highway 20”; Cartoon Network’s “Tiny Toons Looniversity”; and TLC’s “Love & Translation”.
Other upcoming MAX originals planned include: “The Penguin” (a spin-off from “The Batman” movie) starring Colin Farrell; HBO Original drama series “The Sympathizer”, espionage thriller; HBO Original series: “True Detective: Night Country” starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis; HBO Original series “The Regime” with Kate Winslet; Max Original six-part docuseries “SmartLess: On The Road,” starring Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes; and Max Original kids series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai”.
HGTV will contribute a four-part “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge” hosted by Ashley Graham.
The company said the MAX will provide a premium video playback experience with smooth and cinematic quality, along with personalization options with differentiated high quality performance across the platform and supported playback devices.
Users will find a more prominent kids experience including a new default kids profile for new subscribers along with accompanying parental controls. Parents will be able to customize settings with varied limitations by ratings category for each kids profile including: little kids (tv-y), big kids (tv-y7, tvy7-fv), big kids plus (tv-g, g), preteens (tv-pg/pg), or teens (tv-14, pg-13).
Parents will also have the ability to set individual profile PINs to lock access to their adult profiles, as well as a parent code to lock their children inside of the Max kids experience.
The 4K UHD resolution availabe in the MAX Ultimate Ad-Free tier include an expanded catalog of programs in 4K UHD including such popular franchises as Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight Trilogy and more. The company said that all Warner Bros movies released in 2023 and moving forward will be available in 4K UHD when they get to MAX following their theatrical windows.
