Technology to simplify finding and streaming of all-types of OTT content along with linear pay-TV services may soon make its way to your favorite pay-TV set-top box or supporting media streamer.
Vewd, an over-the-top streaming platform developer formerly known for its Opera-branded browser family, introduced this week its Vewd OpX (Operator Experience) software, which will give pay-TV service providers a cloud-managed set-top box solution for integrating linear pay-TV services with aggregated OTT content for easy navigation by subscribers and valuable management and measurement for the provider from the cloud.

Vewd OpX will be available for use with Linux, Android TV, Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Reference Design Kit (RDK) operating platforms and will enable pay-TV operators to deliver content inside a single unified user interface, the company said.
Slated for rollout in the first quarter of 2021, Vewd OpX is based on the Vewd OS, and was developed for pay-TV operators looking to provide instant access to key regional apps and deployment-ready OTT content along with linear pay-TV platforms on their set-top boxes and even third party media adapters.
Vewd OpX is also said to provide service providers with the ability to measure deep analytics for audience targeting and insights, performance measurement and device management. In addition Vewd OpX provides comprehensive customization options beyond look and feel to include content promotion and offers, configured in the cloud.
Vewd OpX will allow seamless integration with service delivery platforms and set-top box middleware of all kinds, the company said.
“Vewd OpX supports customer acquisition and retention by aggregating linear, on-demand, apps, games, and more with an intuitive, forward-looking experience. By easing content discovery and consumption, Vewd OpX improves customer satisfaction and reduces churn,” according to the introductory statement.
The solution is said to be flexible and easily deployed on many different OSs and chipsets, and will allow scaling from an operator’s legacy and current boxes to future devices, including streaming media players.
Vewd said that Vewd OpX is “based on the same technology that powers Vewd OS, Vewd’s own customizable, consumer-grade, silicon-to-content software platform for Smart TVs.”
The platform promises high levels of “reusability, robustness, compatibility with all major silicon platforms, and readiness to support pay-TV services across all connected TV devices.”
“Today’s consumers fluidly mix linear TV and OTT viewing, challenging operators to enable both in a consistent and easy-to-use way,” said Aneesh Rajaram, CEO, Vewd. “Vewd OpX delivers a unified user experience that meets modern subscriber demands, but also provides operators with a common framework to scale their service beyond set-top boxes and onto modern consumer hardware such as streaming dongles. By reimagining the pay-TV experience with Vewd OpX, operators can delight their customers, improve retention, and accelerate revenue growth.”
