Verizon announced this week that its Fios TV app is now available on the Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV streaming devices, expanding app availability beyond strictly iOS and Android mobile devices for the first time.

Using the Fios TV app and service will still require leasing at least one Fios set-top box, which will be included in the bill for the core service offering.

The addition of Fire TV and Apple TV support means that the app can be used to access the service through TVs with a connected or integrated Fire TV OS or an Apple TV device in remote rooms without the need for additional set-top equipment.

There is a limit of two simultaneous streams per Fios TV One box.

“Parents can watch live sports events on the Fios box in the living room while kids watch cartoons and teens watch comedies on connected TVs in their bedrooms,” the company’s announcement said. “With Fios TV One enabling more flexibility, Fios TV users can more easily place TVs in the kitchen, on the back patio or other areas of the house.”

The move comes as Verizon’s Fios, like most traditional cable/satellite/telco TV services, has felt the sting of subscriber churn to cord-cutting. The company reported a loss of 62,000 additional linear pay-TV customers in the second quarter of 2021. The company had lost a reported 81,000 subscribers in the same period a year ago.

According to a statement from Verizon announcing the app expansion, “Now you can Mix & Match how you watch your favorite shows, too. The Fios TV Home App will be available on Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD and Amazon Fire TV beginning July 22, 2021, creating new ways to watch live television with Verizon Fios.”

“With the voice-powered Fios TV One, now included in new Fios TV packages, customers get the first Fios TV box included at no additional charge, and can now watch live television on compatible devices throughout their home,” the company continued.

Meanwhile, the company’s “Mix & Match” strategy, which lets Fios Internet-only customers use third-party live-streaming services like Sling TV or YouTube TV in place of Verizon’s pay-TV service, has helped the company grow its broadband-only business, with the addition of 92,000 Fios Internet customers in the second quarter, up from 10,000 new Fios Internet customers in the same period of 2020.
