Legendary DVR-resource TiVo launched this week its TiVo Stream 4K media streamer dongle that is designed to bring a mini version of the company’s popular remote and unifying easy user-interface that will help users easily find favorite movies and programs from disparate content sources.

The TiVo Stream 4K is an Android-based device that brings shows and movies for the major popular streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Privme Video on one screen. It also provides access to live streaming services like Sling TV for cable cord cutters.

The device also integrates TiVo’s own TiVo+ content catalog to enable a speedy content search experience. The TiVo Stream 4K was first unveiled at CES 2020 in January, and is now available at TiVo.com for a $49.99 introductory price ($69.99 suggested retail price). The product is also offering early purchasers a special 7-day free trial to new subscribers to Sling TV.

TiVo president and CEO Dave Shull said the TiVo Stream 4K “is symbolic of our company’s transformation from a well-loved DVR provider to a pioneer in the streaming market.”

The company calls the product “an evolution not only for TiVo and viewers, but also opens up new opportunities for content creators, content providers and advertisers to attract and engage new audiences.”

Like streamers from Fire TV, Apple TV and others, the dongle will deliver programs in up to 4K resolution with HDR10 high dynamic range and premium Dolby Vision HDR. It will also support Dolby Atmos object-based audio surround. Out of the gate the dongle will provide support for many of the most popular streaming entertainment apps including: Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, YouTube, Sling TV, and more.

Unlike the traditional TiVo DVR products, the TiVo Stream 4K will not have television tuners or a hard drive. TiVo will instead provide program recording and storage from live TV streaming service partners, like Sling TV. TiVo said it will leave its mark on the experience with its popular simple and thorough search and listings simplification.

TiVo Stream 4K includes a shrunken version of the company’s iconic peanut-shaped remote control that long has been included with its DVRs, to direct the simple-to-navigate on-screen user interface. In addition, users will have the option to use voice commands to have TiVo conduct program searches and other tasks.

The integrated TiVo+, free streaming TV network will include access to live streaming channels and thousands of movies and TV shows to viewers in an app-free environment, to make finding favorites easy and fast to get into.

TiVo Stream 4K users will find access to thousands of hours of free movies and TV shows as well as 49 free streaming channels from TiVo+ across news, sports, kids, food, music and comedy.

The small dongle plugs into an HDMI port on a TV and easily connects with a home Wi-Fi network. Unlike its DVRs, the Tivo Stream 4K required no monthly subscription fees, other than what individual app premium services might require.
