Nuvyyo, creator of Tablo Over-the-Air (OTA) DVRs, introduced this week the Tablo Engine — an Android TV-based DVR app for connected media adapters designed for cord-cutters looking to discover, watch, and record to local storage live TV from broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox.

The Tablo Engine allows Android TV-based television media adapter owners, starting with the Nvidia Shield, to record live content to an external, HDMI connected DVR storage device, rather than a cloud service, like many live OTT streaming services are now starting to offer.

The Tablo Engine uses the Tablo user interface and DVR functionality in Android TV-powered set-top-boxes,. The Nvidia Shield will be the first such device to rollout the Tablo Engine compatibility.

By using a “Tablo Tuner OTA USB adapter” or a similar Hauppauge WinTV DualHD TV USB tuner to connect a TV antenna to the Nvidia Shield and downloading the Tablo Engine app, viewers will be able to find live broadcast programs, watch them and record them to the Android TV device without the need for additional Tablo OTA DVR hardware.

Tablo Tuner dual-tuner USB adapters are available now via the Tablo webstore for $69.99. “Consumers are frustrated with the cost and lack of choice offered by today’s pay TV subscriptions,” stated Grant Hall, CEO at Nuvyyo. “That’s why we’ve designed Tablo Engine to address the needs of more traditional cord cutters who simply prefer to watch programs on their primary TV set from the comfort of their couch, versus those who value the flexibility and mobility of our network-based Tablo OTA DVRs which allow you to enjoy OTA TV anywhere, on any device.”

The Tablo Engine captures live, local OTA TV signals picked up by a TV antenna connected to the Android TV device via a compatible dongle like the Tablo Tuner, Nuvyyo’s new dual-tuner USB adapter, or the [amazon_textlink asin=’B015IL0FIW’ text=’Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD USB tuner’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’hc005-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’6c93e92a-5da1-11e7-a993-4b6fef05e99b’] stick.

The free Tablo Engine app provides the Tablo interface and DVR features including:

  • HD resolution video
  • Fast channel changes
  • Recording & time Shifting live broadcasts
  • 14-Day live TV grid guide
  • Content discovery & series recording
  • 5.1 surround sound

A companion browser-based app for Tablo Engine is also available at my.tablotv.com for managing recordings and adjusting Tablo Engine’s settings while on the local network.

Tablo Engine saves recordings in MPEG2 format to the Nvidia Shield’s internal storage (on PRO home media server models) or to a separate USB-connected hard drive (on 16 GB streaming media device models, or on PRO models when using optional expanded storage).

The Tablo Engine app is free to download from the Google Play store and includes a 30-day trial of the fully featured Tablo Engine guide data subscription.

As a special limited time introductory offer, with the purchase of a Tablo Tuner adapter, the company is offering 6 free months of Tablo Engine guide data. After the introductory period, the free guide service will cut back to 24 hours of program listings. After the trail period, the fully featured 14-day guide service is available for a $3.99 monthly (U.S.)/$39.99 annual subscription fee.
