Sony has announced the official release of a new firmware update (v6.1288) that will bring Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) advanced gaming features to HDMI 2.1 among other smoother performance improvements to series X900H and X90CH television models.
Sony’s support page said the update only applies to the specific listed series and models at this time and is available for immediate download via a PC and USB flash drive, here (see instructions at the linked page), or if the television is set-up to accept automatic software updates, it will be rolled out and installed seamlessly in coming days.
For clarity, the North American Sony support notice only applies to the following 2020 TV models at this time: XBR-55X900HXBR-55X90CHXBR-65X900HXBR-65X90CHXBR-75X900HXBR-75X90CHXBR-85X900HXBR-85X90CH.
Sony said other models in line for VRR updates should be receiving those later in the year. Other regions of the world are announcing the updates separately for models that apply to those territories.

Sony made an early release of the software update available in China and with access to other countries on the network earlier for anxious set owners, according to a Reddit posting, but at the time users were warned that certain bugs might arise until the official version (coming today) is available.
Sony’s support page said users will not be able to install older firmware versions once the new update is in place. However, “the latest software version contains all the benefits and improvements of previous versions,” the company assures.
Sony said the firmware update will not erase any personal settings on the television.
Following the firmware installation a new Enhanced format (VRR) menu setting for the HDMI3 and HDMI4 ports will appear. These must be enabled to run VRR.
