Sony Pictures To Release Columbia Classics 4K UHD Blu-ray Set
Those disappointed with down-rezed picture quality coming from streaming video services faced with the crush of viewership during COVID-19 crisis, might appreciate the June launch of an expansive collection of films in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray pulled by Sony Pictures from its Columbia Classics library.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment revealed that it is releasing on June 16, 2020, six of its most acclaimed films — Mr. Smith Goes To Washingtion, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb, Gandhi, A League of the Own, and Jerry Maguire — in a single collection of 4K Ultra HD discs. The release marks the first time these titles have been made available in 4K UHD resolution and high dynamic range (HDR).
The studio said each film has been fully restored and graded for 4K/HDR.
The titles selected for the set came from a recent Sony Pictures Home Entertainment poll that asked consumers which modern classics they wanted to see in a 4K gift set. After receiving more than 30,000 responses, and the top two films cited were A League of Their Own and Jerry Maguire, repectively.
Sony Pictures is only making the six films available on 4K Ultra HD disc within the forthcoming special collector’s set. It will be availabe in a limited-edition run of fewer than 8,000 units in the U.S., Sony said.
The collection will include a hardbound 80-page book containing in-depth coverage about the making of each film by film historian Julie Kirgo.
The set also includes an exclusive disc featuring excerpts from Columbia Pictures’ televised 50th anniversary special, which originally aired in 1975 and has never been officially available, the studio said.
The excerpts will feature rare on-camera interviews with director, producers and actors including: Frank Capra, Phil Silvers and Orson Welles. This exclusive disc will also include the vintage behind-the-scenes documentary “Mr. Attenborough and Mr. Gandhi,” which was filmed on the set of Gandhi showing cast and crew commentaries.

Synopsis: Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture (1964), Stanley Kubrick’s black comedy about a group of paranoia-inspired, war-happy generals who manage to initiate an “accidental” nuclear apocalypse is surprisingly relevant to this day. Scott) and Air Force Strategic Commander Jack Ripper (Sterling Hayden), who orders a bomber squadron to attack the USSR, triggering a Soviet secret weapon, the “Doomsday Machine”, a diabolical retaliatory missile system. Peter Sellers portrays a trio of men who attempt to avert this catastrophe: British Captain Lionel Mandrake, the only person with access to paranoid Gen. Ripper; U.S. President Muffley, whose best attempt at diverting this disaster depends on convincing a boozed-up Soviet Premier it’s all a silly mistake; and the President’s advisor, Dr. Strangelove, a demented ex-Nazi scientist. Can any one of them possibly save the world?
