Sony Electronics formally introduced Thursday the “Perfect for PlayStation 5” campaign for select BRAVIA XR TV models Z9J, A90J, A80J, X95J and X90J in a rare cross-promotional initiative between the company’s two product marketing segments.
The program is designed to help TV shoppers quickly identify Sony television models best equipped to take advantage of the advanced picture and sound capabilities available through the popular next-generation gaming platform.
Among the list of capabilities, Sony said “Perfect for PlayStation 5” TVs will benefit from two new PS5 exclusive features – Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode.

These support frame rates up to 120fps in a 4K UHD resolution as specified in ultra high-speed HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) PS5 compatible games. Sony pointed out that with input lag as low as 6.0ms on the Z9J and 8.5ms3 on the other BRAVIA XR TV models, “customers can experience extraordinary smoothness and responsiveness in shooting, sports and high-performance games with instant on-screen action.”

Auto HDR Tone Mapping optimizes HDR setting instantly during PS5 initial setup. The PS5 will automatically recognize individual BRAVIA XR TV models and select the best HDR setting for the TV accordingly.
With the optimized HDR tone mapping will present crucial details and colors even in high contrast scenes, Sony said. This can result in the addition of detailed visible objects on the track in Gran Turismo 7, for example.
Auto Genre Picture Mode on BRAVIA XR TVs can detect whether users are playing a game or watching movies and shows, Sony said. Auto Genre Picture Mode automatically switches into Game Mode when gaming to minimize input lag for more responsiveness, or to Standard Mode when watching movies via a streaming service or from an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc on the PS5. This shifts the TV’s picture processing for a more expressive picture.
Sony said some of the embellishments will arrive via software updates coming by the end of January 2022, on both the PS5 and BRAVIA XR TVs. This includes access to Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode.
On the audio side, Sony said BRAVIA XR TVs will match up with a range of Sony home theater sound products including the HT-A9 Home Theater System or the HT-A7000 and HT-A5000 soundbars.
“Users can connect the sound products directly to their PS5 and experience the Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode BRAVIA XR-exclusive functions on a BRAVIA XR TV,” Sony’s announcement said.
