Sony Electronics announced Wednesday that it is officially dubbing Sony TVs that will be compatible with its next-generation gaming system “Ready for PlayStation 5,” to hype interactivity with the new console that is due to arrive in the fourth quarter.

The new “Ready for PlayStation 5” tagline was developed collaboratively with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) “to make it easier for consumers to select the optimum TV in preparation for the highly anticipated launch of the PlayStation 5 (PS5), the next-generation game console releasing this holiday season,” Sony Electronics’ statement reads.

The first Ready for PlayStation 5 TVs include the X900H 4K HDR Full Array LED LCD TV series, and the Z8H 8K HDR Full-Array LED series.

Not stated in the official release is that the new designation will help potential Sony customers interested in getting a PS5 quickly identify a television designed to take advantage of the latest gaming features the new console will deliver. A number of Sony TVs being offered in 2020, beyond the two called out for the designation, were not designed to present the lowest lag times or work with some of the new HDMI 2.1 features that can automatically engage both the console and television to present the best possible image without additional user setup prior to running a game.

The X900H, for example, will support certain advanced features included in the PS5 such as 4K resolution images at up to 120fps (via a forthcoming firmware update) and a low input lag of 7.2ms, for competitive action. Other series, like the X950H, offer higher lag times (slower response), in some cases surpassing 20 ms, which is still fast but obviously not to the same level as the X900H or some competitors’ television models.

The Z8H series, meanwhile, is capable of displaying 8K resolution images from the PS5 (after a firmware update) in addition to 4K/120 fps smooth motion when supporting PS5 games are played, Sony said. Both “Ready for PlayStation 5” TV series will provide “extremely smooth gaming experiences with the PS5 console.”

Both the forthcoming PlayStation 5 and its chief rival — Microsoft’s Xbox Series X console will output the higher resolution format for certain games playable at 8K Ultra HD (7680 × 4320 pixels). But at this resolution, the frame rate will be limited to 60 fps.

Other “Ready for PlayStation 5” TV features include a new Sony Game Mode, which allows users to automatically play games on the PS5 at competitive, low latency levels, in a method that sounds similar to Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), but not specifically referenced as such. Sony said its Game Mode will also enable automatically waking both the TV and PS5 at once via the new DualSense wireless controller that will be part of the PS5 system. It will also enable “seamlessly” controlling the PS5 using the compatible TV’s remote.

“Sony’s TVs deliver beautiful pictures with vibrant color and stunning contrast, thanks to the best-in-class family of X1 processors,” the statement reads. “Additionally, powerful sound that comes directly from the TV screen creates a highly realistic and captivating viewing experience. With Sony’s cutting-edge proprietary technologies, users can become fully immersed in the true next-generation of transformative play offered by PS5.”

Sony Electronics and SIE said the Ready for PlayStation 5 concept is an example of Sony Corp’s on-going “One Sony” initiative set up to produce “a unique collaboration of creativity and technology across Sony entities.”
