Sony said Wednesday that it has started delivering a firmware update bringing the latest version of Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) capability to two series of 2018 4K Ultra HDTVs including the Sony Bravia X900F series LED-LCD TVs and Sony Bravia A8F 4K OLED TVs.

Sony said the firmware update will encompass 2018 models in the two series and has started to be released to connected sets in the U.S. and Canadian TVs this week. It will continue to roll out gradually during the first weeks of June.

UPDATE! Sony said Friday that firmware bringing Dolby Vision to its new UBP-X700 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player began arriving through an update in the U.S. and Canada, as well. Like the firmware update for the two 2018 TV series, this one adds support for Dolby Vision content played back from supporting 4K UHD Blu-ray Discs, Netflix and VUDU streamed from the Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player. More information and the update are available at this link.

The addition of support for Dolby Vision HDR (joining HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma HDR profiles) will read and present Dolby Vision dynamic metadata, which produces a wider range of contrast and color grading on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis, to better preserve the artistic vision of the content creators.

Sony said Dolby Vision metadata will be supported in movies on video streaming apps/services that carry DV content installed on the TV, like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. As well, DV movies and programs will be supported by compatible source devices like 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players and streaming media adapters that carry support for the latest version of Dolby Vision firmware.

Sony said that video source devices connected by HDMI inputs “may also require a software update to support Dolby Vision playback through the device itself. For more information on the timing of an update to a particular player, please contact the player’s manufacturer.”

According to the company: “the recommended way to receive this update is to ensure that the “Automatic” software download setting on your TV is turned `ON.’ That way the firmware will be updated automatically in the coming weeks.”

Alternatively, users can download the firmware from the esupport site, and update your TV using a USB flash memory device.

The line has most of the same features and performance of last year’s A1E lineup, but with a different design that substitutes a very low profile stand that positions the screen with less of a tilt than last year’s easle stand. It also removes the attached stand on the back of the A1E models so that the A8F models fit flatter against a the backing surface in wall-mounted applications.
