Live over-the-top (OTT) streaming service Sling TV said Monday that the cloud DVR service it has made available to Sling TV subscribers using Amazon FireTV, Roku and Android media streaming adapters for the past several weeks is now available for Apple TV users as well.

Owners of Apple TV media streaming devices who have a Sling TV subscription are now able to purchase 50 hours of DVR storage for $5 per month. The service allows Sling TV viewers to time shift favorite live programs to view later, provided the program is on one of the channels that permits cloud DVR functionality, Ben Weinberger, Sling TV chief product officer, posted in a blog on the Sling TV web site.

Sling TV executives said that their live OTT TV service is currently the only one on Apple TV that allows keeping recordings as long as the subscriber continues to pay for the cloud DVR service.

Weinberger also said the service allows “pausing, rewinding and fast-forwarding content at any time,” but fast forwarding playback of recordings isn’t available on certain programming and certain channels.

Apple TV users can add the new DVR service by signing into their accounts on sling.com and selecting “Add Cloud DVR”. Sling TV said it will be expanding Cloud DVR capability to other devices in the near future.

Other Cloud DVR features include:

  • Recording favorite programs to watch anytime across all Amazon Fire TVs and Fire tablets, Android mobile devices, Android TVs, Apple TVs, Roku streaming players and Roku TVs.
  • Recording multiple programs simultaneously without recording conflicts.
  • Auto-managed recording that automatically clears out the oldest recordings first when the viewer’s capacity limit is reached to make room for new selections.By Greg Tarr
