Live over-the-top U.S. streaming service Sling TV launched its free advertising-supported television service (FAST) called Sling Freestream.

The DISH Network-owned company said Freestream will roll out across all Sling-compatible devices in the coming months.

The company said Freestream is available now through the Sling app on all Roku devices, and is rolling out across Comcast, LG, Samsung, Vizio and Xbox smart TV device platforms.

Dish Network said it timed the service’s launch-day Wednesday to co-inside with the Sling platform’s eighth anniversary and National Cut the Cord Day.

The service provides free live TV programming with ads without the need to register a credit card. It will go up against other popular FAST services including Paramount’s Pluto TV, FOX’s Tubi TV, The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels and others.

“Sling Freestream is a great new service that helps meet consumers’ evolving needs,” Gary Schanman, Sling TV group president, said in a statement. “We know some people want free content, some may want a year-round paid subscription, while others may want to subscribe for certain events or shows. We have coupled world-class content with the option to easily flex in and out of premium pay-TV, creating a one-of-a-kind entertainment experience.”

At launch, Sling Freestream will carry some 210 channels and 41,000 on-demand titles, all available to watch for free. Genres covered include news, sports, game shows, crime dramas, sitcoms, animal antics, nature, home improvement, cooking and more.

Freestream also provides international programming in seven languages, including AajTak International, Zona TUDN, ARY News, France24, beIN Sports Xtra, SonyKal, Noticias Univision 24/7, TVP World, Al Jazeera English and Al Arabiya.

Sling Freestream also provides users with the ability to subscribe to more than 50 standalone premium streaming services, including AMC+, discovery+, MGM+, Showtime, etc. and/or the ability to add Sling Orange or Sling Blue base subscription-based cable-type live TV channels.

Sling Freestream said it plans to grow the free channel and VOD-title catalog over the next few months and will continue to enhance the user experience into the future. In addition, Sling Freestream is slated to add features including universal search functionality, enhanced channel surfing, updated guide filters, autoplay capabilities and more, the company said.

“On top of the popular content and a seamless user experience, Sling Freestream provides a premium advertising experience that benefits viewers and advertisers alike,” Schanman added. “Built on the same advertising tech that powers Sling, Freestream is yet another opportunity for us to lead, innovate and deliver a greater impact for our advertisers.”
