Samsung Electronics introduced Wednesday night a new 110-inch 4K Ultra HD MicroLED flat-panel TV that should make it an easier proposition to sell large-format MicroLED displays as home theater applications.
Samsung said the latest development allows for selling a MicroLED TV out of one box for the first, although it will likely be focused primarily on well-heeled consumers, at least to start.
Samsung said the new self-emissive big-screen display is available for pre-sale beginning now in its domestic Korean market, and will be rolling out globally starting in the first quarter of 2021. Pricing was not announced, but it’s likely to be steep, though less so than current versions of Samsung’s “The Wall,” modular MicroLED kits. The products have been sold primarily for commercial and professionally assembled and installed applications.
The 110-inch version of the television marks the next chapter in the company’s series of self-emissive flat-panel MicroLED video technology that produce next-generation levels of brightness, black level, wide viewing angles and aversion to screen burn-in.
It also marks one of the smaller screen sizes yet available in the technology, making it more consumer friendly than previous versions of the “The Wall” products. Early iterations of MicroLED displays from Samsung were comprised of configurable modular panels that had to be fitted together and custom installed to form one massive screen with nearly invisible seams.
Samsung’s new 110-inch MicroLED display will be sold in a more traditional one-piece prefabricated form factor without the need to assemble smaller modules. The set streamlines installation and calibration since it is prefabricated, Samsung said, yet it maintains MicroLED’s advanced video, audio, and smart TV performance attributes.
“As consumers rely on their televisions for more functions than ever, we are incredibly excited to bring the 110-inch MicroLED to the commercial market,” stated Jonghee Han, Samsung president of Visual Display Business. “Samsung MicroLED is going to redefine what premium at-home experiences mean for consumers around the world.”

The new approach produces projector-like big screen sizes with superior picture quality benefits to traditional flat-panel TV sets made of 4K LED-LCD panels and even Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) screens, the company said.
Samsung said the latest version of the technology uses “micrometer-sized LED lights to eliminate the backlight and color filters utilized in conventional displays. Instead, it is self-illuminating—producing light and color from its own pixel structures. It expresses 100% of the DCI and Adobe RGB color gamut, and accurately delivers wide color gamut images taken with high-end DSLR cameras.”
The Samsung 110-inch MicroLED is equipped with a powerful new Micro AI Processor that drives the picture processing for high quality 4K HDR images and bright, wide color gamut reproduction. It is said to present realistic, vivid color and picture quality optimized scene to scene.
Samsung also likes to stress that its MicroLED technology uses inorganic materials that are not susceptible to screen burn-in, enabling a long-lasting, durable display panel with a rated lifespan of up to 100,000 hours. That’s the rough equivalent of more than a decade of average use.
“Previously, mass-producing a MicroLED screen as small as 110-inches for simple home installation wasn’t possible. But Samsung innovated to make it a reality by developing cutting-edge surface mount technology — along with a new production process derived from its semiconductor business — making MicroLED technology easier to manufacture, deliver, and install,” Samsung said in a statement announcing the new product. “These same innovations will allow Samsung to produce even smaller MicroLED models in the future, so even more consumers can enjoy the breathtaking MicroLED experience.”
In addition to picture quality, the 110-inch MicroLED TV has a 99.99% screen-to-body ratio, meaning the bezel borders used on most traditional flat-panel TVs have been “completely removed” leaving only the screen, while producing a more immersive content viewing experience.
Samsung also loads the MicroLED TV with its arsenal of Smart TV features. New in the set this year is the ability to use a “Multi View” feature to watch up to four sources of content simultaneously on split screens measuring up to 55-inches each.
Samsung said the feature is perfect for multi-taskers looking to connect multiple external devices to watch news, movies, and other apps simultaneously on one screen. Think of it as a Sports Book display for the home.
The 110-inch MicroLED also features an embedded advanced audio system, called Majestic Sound that delivers 5.1-channel sound with no external speakers necessary. The system supports Object Tracking Sound Pro that identifies objects moving on screen, and projects the sound to seemingly make audio follow the visual action around the screen.
