Samsung and Somerset, N.J.-based lighting resource Signfy have partnered to offer a Philips Hue Sync TV app on newer Samsung TVs to enable seamlessly synchronizing Philips Hue smart lights in the home to match what’s showing on-screen.

This will create a lighting effect reminiscent of the “Ambilight” feature once offered in the U.S. on some Philips branded TV models, and is still offered in select Philips TVs in other markets around the world.

On those Philips-branded TVs, Amblight used lighting built into the rear of the television to cast a glow of changing colors and brightness-syned light to create a sort of mood-setting halo on the wall surrounding the perimeter of the screen.

In addition to the aesthetic benefits, Ambilight was said to make for a more comfortable viewing experience on the eye.

A new paid app from Philips Hue-partner Signify coming to Samsung TVs will enable Philips Hue smart lights in lamps around the room to interact in a similar way to Ambilight with pictures showing on Samsung TVs.

The system synchs with all kinds of on-screen content, from movies to video games and even streaming content from other TV apps, according to an announcement on the Philips-hue.com web site.

Viewers can choose which Philips Hue lights to sync through the app and adjust the placement and height to the level of the TV. From there, users can adjust light intensity, brightness, mood and enable auto-start.

The Philips Hue Sync TV app that was first announced in 2022, is available for newer Samsung QLED TVs. This includes the current Q60 series and higher model ranges and will be available on similar 2023 models. If the TV supports the features, the Philips Hue Sync TV app will appear in a search in the Samsung app store.

To sync the app to the TV, users will need a compatible TV, a Hue Bridge and least one white and color ambiance light. A Wi-Fi or internet connection is needed to purchase the app and to sync with the Hue smart lights.

The Philips Hue Sync TV app is available to purchase for $130.
