Samsung staged several big events at the recent CES 2017 to showcase its 4K Ultra HD LED TVs using new quantum dot technology it has dubbed “QLED”, but the company didn’t say how much the new sets would cost, exactly.
This week Samsung released pricing on two QLED model series – the Q8C and Q7F – which are available for pre-order now. (See links to Amazon below). Shipments will follow shortly. Prices listed below show the manufacturer’s unilateral pricing policy (UPP) terms on the models announced so far. Prices for other lower-priced series and the top-of-the line Q9F series will be announced later.

As we reported during CES 2017, Samsung showcased QLED as the next new advancement in quantum dot technology. The technology uses a new metal alloy formulation in the tiny quantum dot material, which boosts brightness, color gamut, and viewing-angle capabilities to new high levels of performance.
Although the term QLED had been coined to describe another self-emissive form of quantum dot technology still in development, this year’s QLEDs still rely on LCD panels and LED lighting to produce pictures. However, the LEDs have been redesigned and repositioned to fire from multiple angles instead of using a single trajectory from full-array backlighting and edge-lit LEDs.
For 2017’s QLED TVs, all models will have 4K Ultra HD resolution. The 2017 Samsung model series using a “F” in the number will have flat screens and those with a “C” in the model number will have curved screens this year.
The new models will continue to use 10-bit panels will also improve color gamut coverage to 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color volume.
This means they can express full colors at any level of brightness – with even the subtlest differences visible at the QLED’s peak luminance – between 1,500 and 2,000 nits.
Color volume presents color that can be expressed at different levels of brightness. For example, a leaf can be perceived as different colors from yellowish green to turquoise, depending on brightness of the light. Samsung said its QLED TVs can capture even subtle differences in color pertaining to brightness. This kind of color detail cannot be easily depicted in the traditional 2D color space models, Samsung said.

Samsung’s new metal alloy quantum dot material along with perfectly round shape is said to help produce deep blacks and rich detail regardless of how light or dark the scene is, or whether the content is being played in a brightly lit or darkened room.
Eligible Samsung dealers around the country will begin taking preorders on the 2017 Samsung QLED models today with shipments to begin shortly thereafter.
