Samsung this week posted information on its 2018 4K Ultra HD LED-LCD television models in its mid-range NU model tier including the NU8500, NU8000, NU7300, and NU7100 series.
These models are the successors to the 2017 MU series, and step-down from the company’s forthcoming 4K Ultra HD QLED tier that uses quantum dot technology. Those QLED models are expected to be formally unveiled shortly at an upcoming press event.
Models in all four series use edge-lit LEDs, and are available in either flat or curved-screen flavors, like last year. All of the models are listed as supporting high dynamic range, HDR10, and in the NU8500 and NU8000 series, the newer Samsung-developed HDR10+ profile with dynamic HDR. HDR+ will be supported by Amazon Prime videos, among other sources.
Unclear from the posted material is at what peak luminance levels the NU series models begin and stop. This is one of the better ways of identifying at a glance a television’s ability to display the most noticeable specular highlights and color volume levels from HDR and SDR images.
All models feature Samsung’s Tizen OS/Smart Hub platform, and this year include support and control for Samsung’s SmartThings home automation devices (requires use of a SmartThings mobile app with the two lower model lines), as well as Samsung’s Bixby intelligent voice assistant technology for voice-powered operation and multi-device control in the NU8500 and NU8000 series.
Samsung said the NU series models will be available in the March/April time frame.

NU8500 Series
