UPDATED! Samsung introduced Thursday a new JS7000 series to its lineup of “high dynamic range” (HDR) capable SUHD TVs.
The JS7000 models include full array backlighting with local dimming and cover three screen sizes: the 50-inch UN50JS7000, the 55-inch UN55JS7000 and the 60-inch UN60JS7000, carrying unilateral pricing policy (UPP) prices of $1,299, $1,599 and $2,099, respectively.

The JS7000 series is the seventh series in the top-end SUHD TV class and becomes the new entry series for the group. All SUHD TVs employ Samsung’s proprietary Nanocrystal (aka quantum dot) technology to boost image brightness and widen the color gamut close to achieving the Digital Cinema Initiative (P3) color space. That space, which covers more than 50 percent of the visual color spectrum, is used for digital projectors in professional movie theaters.
Until recently, high definition televisions and early 4K UHD models covered up to the Rec. 709 color space, which encompasses about 34 percent of the visual color spectrum. That means TVs, like the JS7000, with wide color gamut technology present colors that are more accurate to what is seen in nature.
Samsung said the S7000 models, like all SUHD class TVs, will be able to accept and display metadata carrying high dynamic range (HDR) information, which will widen the contrast range, while enabling the display of fine details in both very dark areas of a picture and very bright areas of a picture at the same time.

The resulting effect is a picture with both light and dark shades that appear more natural to the eye, without losing information in blacks or washing out detail in bright whites.
However, standards and definitions for HDR have not been established yet, so exactly what peak brightness for HDR will be is not yet known. Each Samsung SUHD TV will receive the HDR metadata and display it to the full potential of the panel in each model class.
The JS7000 series TVs all use 8-bit, non-3D-capable panels, a Samsung spokesperson told HD Guru.
According to a Samsung spokesman, the JS7000 series offer full array backlight like Samsung’s top-end SUHD series, the JS9500. Samsung said the JU7100 conventional 4K UHD Series also has the feature. The JS7000 models also have local dimming technology for deeper black level and increased contrast performance, Samsung said.
The JS7000 is the entry Nano-Crystal Color series boasting a wider color range over Samsung’s conventional 4K UHD TVs and are capable of displaying a more colorful and brighter viewing experience, the company said.
“The JS7000 is part of Samsung’s Nano-Crystal Color innovation messaging for our leading 2015 4K UHD TVs. The entire line up of 4K UHD TVs more than meet the CEA 4K Ultra High Definition definitions and use of the CEA 4K UHD Connected Logo,” Steve Panosian, Samsung spokesman for product marketing management, told HD Guru.com.
Panosian explained that “until the industry associations (CEA, UHDA) publish a specification, or guidelines, and defines the HDR parameters, Samsung can only share that our entire lineup of 2015 4K UHD TVs are capable of displaying high value 4K UHD content that is encoded with an HDR (open standard) profile.
“What each series of TVs achieve (brightness spec, dynamic range, color, etc) is dependent on the limits of that particular series’ features and technology,” said Panosian. “To date, the JS9500 series is being purchased from Samsung by content creators and other parties involved in the 4K UHD and HDR supply chain for the purposes of testing and mastering.”
The JS7000 series TVs handle motion blur using Samsung’s “120 motion rate” technology, which is a 60Hz native refresh rate with additional image processing and backlight manipulation to make moving subjects appear clearer on the screen. For comparison purposes, the next step-up series in the SUHD class, the JS8500 series, comes with a 240 motion rate, (120Hz native refresh rate), meaning those sets will provide smoother motion images than the new JS7000 models.
The JS7000 series models also have a flat LED LCD screen, unlike several SUHD model series with curved LED-LCD screens.
Other features in the S7000 series include: a quad-core smart TV platform, Samsung’s Tizen smart TV operating system for smoother connectivity with smartphones and tablets, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, full web browser, Skype video calling, and screen mirroring to mirror a compatible mobile device’s display.
Panosian told HD Guru that the company added the JS7000 series at this time to “fill in the SUHD TV series with a range of models that are more attractively priced while strengthening the SUHD lineup for the second half.”
