Samsung said Monday that it has started to release a firmware update to 2019 Samsung Smart TVs and select 2018 TV models in 176 countries including the United States bringing a new Apple TV app with AirPlay 2 support.
Once the firmware is downloaded and installed, Samsung said its customers will be able to enjoy Apple TV channels and iTunes movies and TV shows on compatible Samsung Smart TVs without the need for an Apple TV set-top box or any other external media player device.
“As the first TV manufacturer to integrate the Apple TV app on a Smart TV platform, Samsung continues to offer our customers incredible value and access to the Apple TV app experience on the largest screens available today,” stated Won-Jin Lee, Samsung Visual Display Business executive VP, in announcing the app.
The Apple TV app will let users access personal libraries of iTunes movies and TV show purchases and browse more than 100,000 iTunes movies and TV shows to buy or rent, including titles available in 4K HDR, Samsung said.

In addition, the app will enable users to subscribe to Apple TV channels within the Apple TV app and pay for only the channels they want to watch on demand directly.
Other features available in the app on Samsung TVs include access to Apple TV+, Apple’s original video subscription service that is slated to launch this fall.
The AirPlay 2 component will enable Samsung Smart TVs to play videos and other content streamed from their iPhone, iPad or Mac directly to their Samsung Smart TV.
Samsung said The Apple TV app will work seamlessly with Samsung’s Smart TV Services, such as Universal Guide, Bixby and Search, to create a consistent experience across Samsung’s platform.
To get the update, Samsung TV owners need to go into the settings (gear icon) menu on their televisions, scroll down to “support” and “software update”. Users can then choose to “Update Now” action or select “Auto Update” to ensure all firmware updates are installed automatically going forward.
