Samsung has already started selling many of its mid-range 2017 4K Ultra HD LED LCD TVs, which are positioned below the “QLED” (quantum dot) based Q series and will be less expensive, but will still generate brighter-than-average picture quality and a scaled-down version of high dynamic range (HDR).

As this was posted, the company had not yet issued a formal press statement on the 2017 MU model additions, but most of them already appear with model specs and prices on the Samsung web site as well as on authorized dealer sites. We have gathered them for you here. Where possible, we have listed the lowest prices we could find (most of them are restricted by Samsung unilateral pricing policy requirements). Please note that some models include upcoming promotional prices to help you get the best deals a few days from now. We’ve also included links, where available, to Amazon so you can snap them up quickly along with the e-commerce giant’s various return policy benefits.

These more affordably positioned series are identified as part of the MU model tier and include: the MU9000, MU8500, MU8000, MU7500, MU7000, MU6500 and MU6300. The MU series models are the replacements for last year’s KU models, although some of last year’s models remain in the pipeline and will continue to be found for a few months to come, usually at discounted prices. In general, most of the 2017 MU models will offer better HDR and color gamut performance than the 2016 models.

The series roughly alternate between flat-screens and curved-screen models, with fewer curved models offered this year.

All of the MU models offer 4K Ultra HD resolution, HDR at some level of peak brightness (they vary), a wider color gamut than Rec. 709 and incorporate the new-and-improved Tizen-based Smart Hub app platform using the standard Samsung One Remote with voice command.

The top three MU series models will include a One Connect mini box which houses much of the television circuitry and most of the input and output connections. This will enable thinner panel designs.

None of the MU series models will include quantum dot (QLED) technology. Instead they employ advanced processing and bottom and top-positioned LED edge lighting to boost brightness and improve black level performance for HDR.

The TVs also include HDR processing circuitry to enhance the brightness and color of the mid-range performing models. The degree of HDR effect you will perceive from these models will be determined by the model tier level (and pricing) of the respective series. The better the series, the better the HDR and brightness performance.

In general, the MU models are expected to be more aggressively priced and more regularly promoted with limited time specials than the top-tier QLED models. Please note these prices are subject to change – and will change – periodically throughout the year from what is listed here. Check the links (where available) for the latest prices.
