Global Citizen is a world wide movement of action takers and impact makers focused on ending extreme poverty by 2030. The group’s over 10 million monthly advocates, seek to unify their voices to power “lasting change around sustainability, equality, and humanity,” according to an organization mission statement.
Global Citizen will use the event to rally funds for the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO’s mission for COVID-19 is to prevent, detect, and respond to the pandemic. This Fund, powered by the UN Foundation, goes directly to WHO’s rapid response to COVID-19, the organization said.
In a globally controversial move, U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at the WHO Wednesday for failing to challenge China’s early assertion that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus. China first informed the WHO of “a pneumonia of an unknown cause,” on December 31, 2019. Trump has said this week he will end U.S. funding of the WHO, pending a review of the organization’s activities surrounding the outbreak.
A detailed chronology of checked facts leading up to Trump’s controversial action can be found here.
According to a statement, the UN and the WHO asked Global Citizen to support their COVID-19 response by bringing the world together through music and inspiring everyone to take action.
For its part, Roku is making the One World event available on various other channels on its platform outside of the United States, including, in Canada, via BeIN Sports Xtra on The Roku Channel as well as on channel partners Crave and Global TV. In the U.K., Roku users can tune in through BBC iPlayer and Insight TV, while those in Brazil will find it through Globoplay.
Similarly, the National Football League (NFL) announced it will be providing a Telethon of its own for COVID-19 frontline workers and first responders during televised coverage of the NFL Draft, April 23-25th on ESPN, the NFL Network and ABC. That event hasn’t been mentioned in association with the WHO controversy.
