Roku is adding the new CNN Plus premium subscription video on demand service to a new expanded CNN app, the news service announced in a blog Monday.
Roku TV and Roku media streaming adapter users will soon be able to get the new service by downloading an updated CNN app through the Roku channel store. The CNN app will contain both the CNN Plus subscription service and access to the existing TV everywhere experience available to pay TV subscribers currently through the CNNgo app.
The expanded streaming app will be adding access to live TV feeds of CNN, CNN International and HLN, in addition to a range of on-demand documentaries and other fare in the new expanded service from the producers of CNN.
The announcement came just 11 days after the launch of the new CNN Plus app, giving the new service access to one of the largest TV OS streaming platforms in the U.S.
To get the service, Roku users will need to sign up for a $5.99-a-month premium CNN Plus subscription, which is also available as a $59.99 annual plan.
With the announcement, Roku beats out some other smart TV platform heavy hitters, including Google TV/Android TV sets, Smasung Tizen smart TVs, LG webOS TVs as well as the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox gaming consoles. It’s likely others will follow shortly., though.

The CNN Plus service launched on March 29th with initial device partners Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV as well as both major mobile device platforms — Apple iOS and Android.
At the end of 2021, Roku reported 60.1 million active accounts, nearly 88% of which were located in the United States. The company is aggressively trying to expand the platform to other global regions.
According to the CNN announcement: “Roku users can now access the robust content offering available on CNN+. CNN+ features 8-12 live daily shows, new CNN+ Original Series and a library of more than 1,000 hours of award-winning programming from the CNN Original Series and CNN Films teams. Additionally, the streamer’s Interview Club feature available on desktop, mobile and tablets, houses a thriving community that enables subscribers to drive the conversation and be part of the story.”
