What do you get the dad who has everything? More tools, a tablet computer, cologne? No, get him the big-screen 4K Ultra HDTV with high dynamic range (HDR) that he’s been dreaming about.
Nevermind that he already has a big-screen flat-panel TV in the living room. The time is right to get him a bigger and better one that can take advantage of all the high-performance resolution, wide color gamut and HDR brightness highlights that make pictures seem to jump off the screen and into the room.

Here are some of the points to keep in mind:
Resolution: For the past several years, 4K Ultra HDTVs have started to dominate the landscape offering resolution levels of 3840×2160 pixels, up from the prior peak of 1920x1080p Full HD, and entry 720p HD resolution. You’ll still find some models with those lower resolution levels in screen sizes under 49 inches, but the future of content will be 4K (and eventually 8K), so it’s always a good idea to go with the prevailing currents and get the best resolution level you can afford to avoid having to downscale really great native Ultra HD pictures to fit the cheaper TV’s lower-quality screen as the years go by.
To get the most out of 4K Ultra HD dad will want to go with the largest screen size he can fit and afford. So, it’s best not to go lower than 50-inches if you can help it. Really, 65-inches and larger show off the detail benefits the added pixel count will supply. And don’t forget that most 4K UHDTVs now support HDR, which will take advantage of those extra pixels by bringing extra brightness and colors, too.
If you really want to get dad excited look at a 75-inch jumbo model and Ultra HD nirvana will be attained.
Viewing Angle: If you think dad wants to be alone when watching his new TV, viewing angle doesn’t matter much. All LED LCD TVs look very good when viewing them straight on from the center of the screen. However, if he sits at an off-angle (or you do) you’re best off with a wide-viewing angle TV. This means to look for a TV with a newer Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) screen, an IPS LCD panel, a Nano Crystal LCD screen or a 2017 QLED screen. But, all things considered, you won’t do better than an OLED for the widest viewing radius. You’ll see some included below.
Motion resolution: If dad watches a lot of sports, you’ll want to get a set that handles fast moving subjects in the clearest way possible. All TVs have their various weaknesses in this regard, but some are getting much better at it. At an absolute minimum, the HD Guru suggests you try to get an LED LCD TV with a native refresh rate of at least 120 Hz. Manufacturers will add various motion processing systems to this to get images even clearer, but if they are starting with sub-120 Hz native panels, the processing will have a harder time making images look really great.
Most of the 2017 OLED TVs have significantly improved their motion handling. Alas, nothing will be as good as old fashioned plasma and CRT TVs used to be at handling motion, but they didn’t have the resolution or power savings of today’s models. Rest in peace, old friends.
