LG will add WiSA wireless speaker connectivity to 2019 4K OLED and top-end 4K LED-LCD TVs, the company and WiSA technology developer Summit Wireless Technologies revealed Tuesday.

LG and Summit, which is a founding member the Wireless Speaker Audio Association that handles the WiSA standard, released a joint statement on the move in the weeks leading up to CES 2019, where LG’s 2019 product portfolio will be announced in detail.

LG becomes the first major TV manufacturer to sign on with the WiSA Ready Certification program introduced in September.

According to the WiSA teaser, “LG will leverage Summit technology and WiSA Certification to make their 2019 lines of OLED and flagship UHD LCD TVs WiSA Ready and compatible with WiSA USB Transmitters as well as a range of intelligent, WiSA Certified speakers.”

With WiSA capability, the owner of one of next year’s supporting LG TV models will be able to purchase an optional WiSA USB transmitter to connect to one of the television’s USB ports. This will make the television capable of seamlessly and easily linking to supporting WiSA Certified wireless speakers, without the need to run speaker cables.

“WiSA Ready LG TVs are an integral part of our delivering next generation audio to a mass, global market with seamless compatibility and ease of setup,” stated Brett Moyer, president and CEO of Summit Wireless Technologies.. LG’s advanced television models already support built-in advanced audio technologies, including decoding for the Dolby Atmos 3D surround sound format.

WiSA technology will let supporting LG TV models pair with any WiSA Certified wireless speakers for low-latency (as low as 5ms) and hi-fi sound. WiSA specifies use of the 5.2-5.8 GHz frequency band. Certified WiSA speakers are currently available from such major speaker brands as Klipsch, Bang & Olufsen, Axiim, Enclave Audio and others.

WiSA-ready devices, like the forthcoming LG TVs, will link with WiSA Certified speakers and products to deliver  multi-channel wireless multi-channel audio capabilities for more authentic surround sound. The standard also provides easy and seamless setup with  accurate sound synchronization.

Summit’s WiSA technology supports up to 8 channels of uncompressed 24-bit audio with support for the latest audio decode formats, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object based audio. Summit said its WiSA’s low-latency benefits are up to “20 times better than standard Bluetooth and WiFi technologies.”

Additionally, the technology uses Summit’s patent pending ADAPT algorithms for active detection, avoidance and prioritization technology more than doubles wireless network capacity, reducing the chance of interference from surrounding wireless networks.

“Intelligent TVs are the centerpiece of today’s next generation home entertainment systems and audio is essential to the overall experience,” stated Tim Alessi, senior director, product marketing at LG Electronics. “With WiSA Ready displays, we recognize the tremendous benefits that consumers will enjoy in taking advantage of truly immersive, wireless sound that complements all kinds of big-screen home entertainment from movies and video to games, esports, and more.”
