Portrait Displays, developers of the industry standard video display calibration software known as Calman and other display control systems, announced Tuesday that it has joined the multi-industry home entertainment standards body, the UHD Alliance (UHDA).
The company said it joined the UHDA to align itself in the UHDA’s mission to enhance the consumer experience in the advocacy for the preservation of creative intent.
Portrait Displays is the company behind Calman color calibration software, which is widely recognized by color professionals as the standard solution to ensure that content is accurately displayed across screens of all sizes. The software is designed to streamline calibration methods for consistent results that present in beautiful color.

The UHDA is a global coalition comprised of leading consumer electronics manufacturers, film and television studios, content distributors, and technology companies, including: BenQ, LG, MediaTek, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, TP Vision, and others.
As a multi-industry group, the UHDA and its members establish performance requirements for resolution, high dynamic range (HDR), and other video and audio attributes, in addition to strengthening ties to assist consumers in building seamless, integrated, and high-quality end-to-end UHD ecosystems.

Among the accomplishments of the UHDA was the establishment of Filmmaker Mode, a package of TV picture settings that automatically turn off any picture processing that can make movies feel somewhat unnatural and display differently than the director intended, while also maintaining the film’s original aspect ratio, colors and frame rate for a more authentic experience.
“Creating a space for creatives and consumers to have access to an outstanding lens to living room experience has always been a primary goal of ours,” commented Marcel Gonska, Vice President of Marketing, Portrait Displays. “To be able to work next to many of our own clients and partners in order to push industry-wide efforts forward into the next generation of home entertainment is very exciting to Portrait Displays.”
“From its inception, the UHDA’s primary focus has been on preserving the filmmaker’s creative intent in home viewing environments,” explained Michael Zink President, UHD Alliance. “Portrait Displays’ considerable experience in the color calibration process, coupled with their commitment and contributions to continually improving the home entertainment experience, makes them a most welcome addition to the UHDA. We look forward to their involvement.”
