Paramount To Release Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos Ultra HD Blu-ray Titles

Paramount Home Media Distribution will start mastering and releasing movies with Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) and, in some cases, with Dolby Atmos object-based surround sound on Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs and video streaming, Dolby revealed Thursday.

Paramount joins a list of top Hollywood studios that have committed to Dolby’s HDR format, which among other things, enables dynamic metadata that makes use of material color graded at varying brightness levels on a scene-by-scene or even shot-by-shot basis, instead of grading at one set level across an entire production.

The added flexibility is said to produce images that are more lifelike and detailed.

Because support for HDR10 is deemed mandatory in Ultra HD Blu-ray specifications when using HDR, and because Dolby Vision also shares the same Electro Optical Transfer Function (EOTF) as HDR10 any UHD Blu-ray Dolby Vision HDR discs are also expected to include support for HDR10.

Neither Paramount nor Dolby revealed which titles the studio would release first with Dolby Vision and/or Dolby Atmos support.

Studios that have already committed to Dolby Vision on Ultra HD Blu-ray and streaming include: Lionsgate, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros. A major Ultra HD Blu-ray retailer also recently posted specifications for Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Ultra HD Blu-ray disc showing Dolby Vision support.

The Paramount Home Media Distribution announcement leaves only Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment as the remaining major studio that has not made a commitment to Dolby Vision for home distribution.

“Consumers with Dolby Vision enabled televisions and Dolby Atmos enabled home theater products will now be able to enjoy a broad spectrum of entertainment from Paramount Pictures and have access to a growing catalog of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision content worldwide,” said Dolby.

“The combination of high quality, immersive audio and dramatic visual imaging truly elevates the home viewing experience,” stated Bob Buchi, President, Worldwide Home Media Distribution, Paramount Pictures, in Dolby’s press announcement. “Having diligently studied the range of offerings in next generation home entertainment technologies, we are thrilled to be working with Dolby to enhance the consumer entertainment experience as they enjoy Paramount’s movies in Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.”

Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio format that immerses listeners with surround sound, including overhead height channels that enables the sound of on-screen objects to appear to follow the action throughout the viewing room. The surround sound format is expected to accompany most Dolby Vision titles.

Dolby said that to date, more than 100 studio titles are available in Dolby Vision (streaming and/or Ultra HD Blu-ray), and more than 200 titles are available in Dolby Atmos (streaming and/or Blu-ray Disc Full HD). More than 125 hours of original content is available in Dolby Vision across leading OTT providers globally, the company said.

I’ve seen Dolby Vision in both Movie theatres and UHD Bluray (Dispicable Me , Fate of the Furious and Power Rangers in UHD 4K Bluray ) awesome worth every penny.
Regular HDR 10 (plain) no umph.

Wont be buying anymore UHD 4k Bluray Movies unless with DOLBY VISION.
