OPPO Digital, the manufacturer of high-performance universal disc players, headphones, and mobile device technologies, said Monday that it is jumping into the wireless multi-room audio market with a new Sonica Wi-Fi Speaker, available through the company’s web site starting today.

Sonica, which is available at a $299 retail, is a Wi-Fi speaker offering high fidelity sound from a compact unit. The speaker is equipped to link to music sources via: Wi-Fi, AirPlay and Bluetooth. OPPO is providing a companion smartphone and tablet app that enables using and managing multiple speakers on the same network, the company said.

With the Sonica app, users can play one song on multiple Sonic speakers or stream different songs to different speakers positioned in various parts of the house.

The Sonic Wi-Fi speaker was developed under the supervision of acoustic design engineer Igor Levitsky, who also developed OPPO’s PM-series planar magnetic headphones. The Sonica speaker drivers, amplifiers, and chassis were said to have been tuned for “a deep, pure, and engaging sound.”

Sound can be optimized with built-in presets for different room sizes, speaker locations, and listening preferences using the Sonica app, OPPO said.

Sonica is capable of decoding audio files up to 24-bit / 192 kHz from mobile devices, USB drives, DLNA servers, and NAS drives. The speaker will support lossless audio formats including: FLAC, WAV, and Apple Lossless.
