Those interested in getting the highest fidelity from their over-the-air music broadcasts might be interested in checking out the forthcoming MR89 radio tuner for vaunted high-end Hi-Fi components manufacturer McIntosh.
The McIntosh MR89 AM/FM Tuner was engineered to include a host of advancements to maximize radio listening, “including adjustments to
sensitivity, signal to noise ratio, harmonic distortion, channel selectivity, and stereo separation,” the company said.
Also among the performance upgrades are stereo blending including the introduction of a “High Blend” option, softmute feature to reduce audio output on lower quality station input, and highcut function to reduce high frequency and audio content, among other enhancements.
Orders for the MR89 can now be placed with authorized McIntosh dealers om the United States and Canada for a $5,500 (USD) suggested retail with shipping expected to begin in June 2022. The component will be available in other regions of the world shortly thereafter, the company said.
McIntosh said the MR89’s advanced signal quality monitor can display detailed signal, multipath, and noise levels of the incoming radio signals to help fine-tune optimal placement of the AM or FM antenna (a McIntosh RAA2 AM antenna is included with the product).

Additionally, a pair of balanced and unbalanced analog outputs and digital coax and optical outputs are included to connect the MR89 to any home audio system. The tuner features exclusive McIntosh radio frequency (RF) circuitry “that can receive both strong FM signals from nearby stations, avoiding overload or distortion” common in less-capable tuners. The MR89 will also being tune in weaker FM signals while mitigating interference noise.
Ken features of the McIntosh MR89 include:
• Softmute feature to reduce audio output of lower quality station input
• Highcut function to reduce high frequency and audio content
• FM Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS) support to display station and music information
• Adjustable Seek function
• Ability to store 20+ preset stations for both AM/ FM
A pair of built-in 60dB output meters are included to monitor the signal level from the analog outputs of each channel, while volume is controlled by other connected components including the preamplifier, integrated amplifier, or other control device.
The analog meters on the MR89 provide accurately visual indication of the Left and Right channel audio output generated from the received station. McIntosh said, “depending on the program received, the meters are a good indication of the MR89’s quality stereo separation,” the company said.
AM and FM frequency reception for of MR89 varies by country, and McIntosh provides a detailed frequency listing on its website for reference.
The cosmetic design of the MR89 is in keeping with McIntosh tradition. This includes a black glass front panel, blue illuminated meters, knobs and brushed aluminum end caps housed in a mirror-polished stainless-steel chassis.
