LG To Unveil its 2015 Quantum Dot 4K Ultra High Definition TV at 2015 CES
LG plans to demonstrate at the Consumer Electronic Show next month its first TV to use a quantum dot film to widen the color pallet and saturation as part of its 2015 4K UHD TV line-up. Unlike conventional 4k UHD LCDS which rely on white LEDS as a light source, LG’s quantum dot film uses blue LEDs to create the three primary colors (red, blue and green).

Quantum dots use very tiny crystals called nano crystals that range in size from just 2 to 10 nanometers. Each crystal dot emits a different color depending its size. “By adding a film of quantum dots in front of the TVs LEDs, “picture color reproduction and overall brightness are significantly improved”, according to the LG press release.
The quantum dot 2015 models will be offered in two screen sizes, 55-inch and 65-inch. In-kyu Leed LG’s senior vice president and head of TV and monitor division of LG Electronics Home Entertainment division stated in the press release “Quantum dot’s vibrant and vivid color reproduction capabilities brings LG’s LCD TVs to the next level when it comes to picture quality,” and added “The addition of ULTRA HD TV with quantum dot technology to our TV lineup, positioned under our award-winning OLED TVs, further establishes LG as a leading provider of the most diverse and innovative TV display technologies in the industry.”
Sony has been using quantum dot technology in select models for the last 2 years and Chinese TV maker TCL has also announced it will be incorporating quantum dots in select models for the Chinese domestic market.
We expect other companies to announce quantum dot film technology when their respective US model 4K UHD TVs debut at the 2015 CES.
