LG’s marketing VP Dave Vanderwaal unveils the LG W7 4K OLED TV at CES 2017.

UPDATE! LG Electronics (LG) used an event in Seoul, South Korea Wednesday to officially announce its “dual premium strategy” which will be used to promote and sell the company’s 2017  4K Ultra HD OLED and Super UHD LED LCD TVs, the latter of which now use new “Nano Cell” display technology.

The event marked one of the first times that the company has positioned its Super UHD 4K LED LCDs at or close to the same level as its advanced 4K OLED TV models.

The televisions were first displayed last month at CES 2017 in Las Vegas. The new Super UHD TV models will be available in Korea in coming weeks along with 2017 4K OLED sets that will first roll out in South Korea and the United States, in February and March. The Super UHD LED LCD TVs will hit the U.S. in February and March, LG said in a global statement released from the company’s domestic headquarters.

LG’s U.S. sales and marketing company released pricing on the Super UHD TVs for the first time on Thursday. There were some models missing from those originally disclosed to the press prior to CES 2017. Pricing on two 65-inch Signature Series models (in the G7 and W7 series) were the same as was shared with dealers earlier and reported by HD Guru, but prices were raised by up to $1,000 from what was leaked by dealers earlier on 65- and 55-inch models in the C7 and E7 series.

“Our 2017 TV lineup features state-of-the-art display technologies that break the boundaries of TV viewing,” stated Brian Kwon, LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company president. “This year, we will continue to extend the premium TV market with a dual premium strategy based on our unrivaled OLED TVs and groundbreaking Super UHD TVs with Nano Cell display. With these innovative TV products, our customers will be able to enjoy the best home entertainment experience that the industry has to offer.”

LG Signature OLED TVs, in the W7 and G7 model series this year, are said to “embody the company’s pursuit of the best possible viewing experience, featuring the most advanced technologies available in the display industry.”

The flagship W7 “wall paper design” series was designed using a “less is more” philosophy that strips away everything from the TV panel to present the beauty of the on-screen images alone. The set comes in two parts – the razor-thin panel measuring 4mm thick, and a Dolby Atmos-enabled sound bar with pop-up height speakers that also houses the inputs and electronic circuitry for the TV set. The panel, which can be held on a wall with magnets, connects the sound bar with a ribbon-like flat cable that can be positioned over or inside a wall. LG recommends a professional installation for in-wall applications.

This year’s OLED TVs discontinue LG’s support of 3D features, Full HD 1080p resolution and models with curved screens, all in response to changing market demand. This year all OLED series, including the C7, will have flat screens. Models in the W7 and G7 series will be available in 65-inches. The company also announced 77-inch screen sizes for each series, but those were omitted from the most recent pricing and availability announcements. Models in the B7, C7, and E7 will be available in 55- and 65-inch sizes.

The G7 and E7 models have a picture on glass design. The B7 and C7 models are packaged in more affordable design configurations, although the picture quality in all OLED series will be virtually the same, LG executives said. The screens are 25 percent brighter and support up to 99 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. LG has also improved input lag, bringing it down to just 21 milliseconds this year, for more responsive game play.

This year, all LG Super UHD LED LCD TVs and all four 4K OLED model series support four HDR formats (HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG and Advanced HDR by Technicolor). LG calls its versatile HDR format handling capability “Active HDR”. LG is one of the few companies this year with step-up TVs that will sport a range of HDR formats this wide. Select models also have an “HDR Effect” mode which helps televisions generate HDR-like brightness and color qualities from standard dynamic range (SDR) content.

LG said that because OLED technology can turn on or off each individual pixel on the display, “OLED offers an enhanced picture quality without image degradation, such as light bleed typically found in conventional backlit systems. This results in the highest quality image rendering with the purest black and lifelike colors.”

Meanwhile, LG’s new Super UHD LED LCD TVs, which are in the third generation, uses new Nano Cell technology, which the company said is comprised of nanometer-sized particles (similar to quantum dots but using uniform particle sizes) “to offer incredibly accurate color reproduction.”

According to LG, the Nano Cell display absorbs stray lightwaves, “resulting in purer, cleaner colors. This light absorbing capability allows LG’s new LCD displays to filter out specific colors with much greater precision, rendering each color exactly as it was intended.”

For example, LG said the color red on conventional TVs can blend with other color wavelengths, such as yellow or orange, causing the color to fade and take on a yellowish tint. LG Nano Cell reduces such “color fading, image instability and other color degradation issues.”

The technology also delivers consistent colors at wider viewing angles “with virtually no color difference between viewers seated directly in front of the screen and those watching at a 60-degree angle,” the company said.

Nano Cell technology uses a special film layer carrying the tiny particles, similar to some competitive quantum dot systems. Furthermore, LG combines the Nano Cell technology with its In-Plane Switch LCD panel technology that also enhances off-angle viewing.

Reflectivity is also minimized to maintain high picture quality in environments with ambient lighting, LG said.

The 2017 LG Super UHD TVs will also use improved Ultra Luminance technology to boost image brightness and highlights. Inclusion of Active HDR support is added with scene-by-scene color grading through Dolby Vision.

LG said it has partnered with Technicolor to offer TV images that accurately recreate the artistic intentions of content creators. This partnership enhances the LG’s color reproduction technologies for more vivid colors. A Technicolor Expert Mode will be added to the sets in 2017 to help users select the most accurate colors possible in LG’s Super UHD TVs, LG said.

The 2017 Super UHD models will encompass the SJ9500/SJ9570, SJ8500/SJ8570 model series, and all will deliver 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixel) resolution, the aforementioned HDR formats and a wide color gamut.

Missing from the official release statement were the SJ8000 series models that were previously discussed at CES 2017.

The new Ultra Slim design used for the Super UHD models include a crescent-shaped stand, which gives the 65-inch SJ9500 ($3,999 UPP, March) model the effect of floating in the air.

The Super UHD 4K Ultra HD LED LCD TV tier includes new Nano Cell Display film technology for enhanced color range; Active HDR with Dolby Vision; Ultra Luminance; HDR Effect; and webOS 3.5.

The SJ8500 Super UHD series will include the 55- ($1,999, February), 65- ($2,799, February) and 75-inch ($3,699, February) screen sizes. This steps up to a “Frame-less Design” with a crescent-shaped stand. LG calls the design a four-sided cinema screen that minimizes the width of the bezel trim around all four sides of the screen, including the bottom edge. Models will also include “Advanced Local Dimming” technology for deep black levels.

At the top of the 4K LED LCD TV assortment is the UJ9500 series featuring an OLED-like ultra-thin screen; the widest contrast ratio in the LG LCD class and both 65- ($3,999, March) and 86-inch ($7,999, March) screen size models.

Both the 2017 4K OLED TVs and new Super UHD LED LCD TVs will be equipped with the latest webOS 3.5 smart TV platform, which upgrades the system with a few extras to make set operation even easier. This includes an improved Magic Remote and new Magic Link features that let viewers instantly access favorite services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video by pressing a hot key on the remote control, tapping into a wide variety of stunning 4K programming.

Connecting the LG TV to a mobile phone or PC with a USB cable will now enable seeing 360-degree Virtual Reality (VR) content. LG showcased the function at CES 2017 along with the Channel Plus free service powered by XUMO that integrates more than 70 free streaming digital channels including sports and news from national broadcast networks such as Fox Sports, Newsy, Sports Illustrated, Time, Bloomberg, People, Funny or Die, Fail Army and more into existing over-the-air TV channel options.
