LG Electronics USA Thursday released pricing and availability details on its 2020 NanoCell LED-LCD TVs including 12 new 4K and 8K Ultra HD models. Highlighting this year’s lineup are “Real 8K” NanoCell LED-LCD TVs in the Nano99 series, and 4K Ultra HD models in the company’s Nano90 model assortment.
At the head of the class is the company’s 86-inch Nano99 Real 8K series, which also includes 75- and 65-inch screen sizes, and an LG Nano90 4K UHD series model which was a CES 2020 Innovation Award winner.
All included, the 2020 NanoCell TV lineup offers screen sizes ranging from 49- to 86-inches. Models are available at select retailers now and are expected to be coming to Amazon shortly.
The flagship of the assortment is LG’s 2020 8K NanoCell TV series, which the company pointed out “exceeds the industry requirements for 8K Ultra HD TVs” as defined by the Consumer Technology Association’s contrast modulation criteria. For this reason, LG said its 8K LED-LCD TVs are expected to carry the CTA’s 8K Ultra HD logo joining LG’s 2020 ZX series of 8K OLED TVs.
LG explained that its NanoCell TVs use a layer of one-nanometer sized particles (NanoCells) that “filter out impurities resulting in natural, lifelike color, which remain more accurate, even at wide viewing angles.” This is different from so-called QLED TVs from Samsung and other manufacturers, which use quantum dot particles to boost color performance and color volume after being excited by photons from LED backlights.
Most of the 2020 NanoCell 4K TV models (except the entry Nano81 series models) feature LG’s α (Alpha) 7 Gen 3 Intelligent Processor that is used to drive picture and sound processing systems for an optimized experience viewing sources of various resolution levels.
The flagship Nano99 8K models step up with LG’s most powerful α (Alpha) 9 Gen 3 AI Processor 8K, which is also used in the company’s high-end 2020 OLED TVs to upscale and enhance incoming signals of varying quality levels. The top-end processor leverages deep learning technology to continually optimize 8K images for the best results, the company said.
In addition, both the Nano90 and Nano99 series models employ LED backlighting with Full Array Local Dimming to divide the backlighting into smaller blocks for more precise brightness and contrast control, to improve black levels while presenting high-quality High Dynamic Range (HDR) images.
Like its OLED TVs, LG’s 2020 NanoCell TVs support most of the major HDR profiles, including Dolby Vision, basline static metadata HDR10 and live broadcast HLG. The televisions also build in support for Dolby Atmos 3D surround sound decoding for a more expansive sound stage. The entry Nano81 series models omit support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
New this year, LG’s NanoCell TVs also include the new Ultra HD Alliance-developed Filmmaker Mode that after being activcated automatically adjusts the TV’s picture to present a picture that best matches the intent of the content creator. Similarly, the televisions also have picture modes that can be tuned to optimize the look of live video like sports as well as video games based on criteria from the HDR Gaming Interest Group’s (HGiG) HDR gaming profile. The latter enables the TV to render graphics and adjust response times for the best competitive results.
Other gaming performance enhancements available in the models include surpport for: auto low-latency mode (ALLM) on the Nano99 and Nano91 series and variable refresh rate (VRR) on the Nano 90 and Nano 85 series. These present smooth action and optimize the synchnorization between the gaming hardware and the display.
For smart TV capablity, LG includes the latest version of its webOS Smart TV platform, which offers access to a wide selection of the most popular streaming apps and services, including popular newcomers like the Movies Anywhere app for smart TVs, Apple TV+ and Disney+. LG also provides in the sets its ThinQ AI platform that is compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice control and brings support for AirPlay2 and HomeKit.
LG supplies the televisions with its popular Magic Remote that can be used to make quick and easy on-screen selections while also facilitating voice pickup for voice control commands.
