LG Electronics officially kicked off the launch of its six-model 2019 sound bar lineup, highlighted by the SL9YG and SL10YG models with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding.
The new 2019 models include: the SL5Y ($279), SL6Y ($399), SL7Y ($499), SL8YG ($799), SL9YG ($999) and SL10YG ($1,299).
LG said all of the 2019 sound bar models will be available the week April 14th with the exception of the SL9YG, which will be available the weekend of May 27th. Among the first models to hit retail shelves will be the LG SL6Y.
All of the new models are distinguished by sleek new styling that accents the thin flat panel design of LG’s 4K Ultra HD NanoCell LED LCD TVs. The lineup also includes artificial intelligence (AI) smart connectivity and voice recognition with the Google Assistant built-in with no need for additional voice input devices.

The top three models (SL8YG, SL9YG and SL10YG) are said to offer stepped up audio quality through LG’s collaboration with high-end audio technology manufacturer Meridian Audio, which contributed its advanced digital signal processing technology, in developing the series. The top three models all support built-in Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based audio decoding that immerse listeners in sound from all directions.
LG said the new models have been engineered to generate a sound field “with greater height, width, and depth,” and the SL9YG offers a special spin on the concept.
The SL9YG, which was an HD Guru Best Sound Bar of CES award winner, features 4.1.2 channel surround sound effect, with support for Hi-Res Audio, and Meridian Technology and built-in Dolby Atmos decoding. It also offers an unusual ability to be positioned flat on a tabletop in front of a stand-mounted TV with forward and up-firing speakers, that surround listeners seated around the room. Optionally, it can be converted to be mounted flat against a wall below a wall-mounted flat-panel TV with forward and down-firing speakers to maintain the immersive surround sound effect.
The SL9YG automatically senses the proper orientation of the speaker and adapts and optimized the sound output to the room. The SL9YG features what LG called a “slim wall-mountable design.”
The top-of-the-line SL10YG offers more power to support a 5.1.2-channel surround sound effect.
Key features of the remaining models include the following: SL5Y,
2.1-channel surround with DTS Virtual:X sound supported; SL6Y, 3.1-channel surround with DTS Virtual:X; SL7Y, 3.1-channel surround with DTS Virtual:X and the SL8YG, 3.1.2-channel surround with Hi-Res Audio support, Meridian DSP technology, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding.
