LG Display Showcases Transparent WOLED As A Digital Medium For NFT Artworks
LG Display, the video display panel manufacturing arm of LG Electronics, continued to showcase its new application for Non-Fungiable Token (NFT) art using its transparent OLED technology.
The maker of most of the world’s supply of White RGB (or WOLED) display panels and the world’s only manufacturer of transparent OLED ones, revealed Wednesday that it has collaborated for only the second time with Turkish-American new media artist Refik Anadol to showcase his latest AI-driven NFT collection, “An Important Memory for Humanity,” using transparent OLED technology as the electronic canvas.
The transparent OLED technology is still very expensive and rare, but the use of NFT art on the medium perhaps demonstrates an application for its broader use as a new medium going forward.
LG Display has shown transparent OLED displays for several years now, with applications focused mainly on commercial signage market and other public showcases. This is a rare application of NFT art leveraging the dual-sided viewing application.
LG Display said this latest presentation of a limited-edition NFT collection utilizes video, audio and health data taken from “Inspiration, the first- ever all-civilian spaceflight,” to create a unique and expressive series of data visualizations.
An NFT is a digital financial security technology consisting of data stored in a blockchain, a form of distributed ledger. The ownership of an NFT is recorded in the blockchain to assign ownership, and can be transferred by the owner, allowing NFTs, such as digitized artworks, to be sold and traded. The use of blockchain prevents duplication to secure value.

LG Display said that “while the wide spectrum of colors, lines and spots express the bold venture out into space, its depiction on a Transparent OLED panel is a reminder of humanity’s technological evolution.”
LG Display added that the unique application of the transparent panel technology “creates an awe-inspiring holographic effect that makes the digital art pieces appear to be floating mid-air.”
The NFT art collection was recently auctioned off for $6.2 Million, with 30% of the profits going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the buyer receiving the NFT collection on a Transparent OLED panel, the company said.
“I understood how amazing the OLED can be for communicating data paintings and data sculptures,” remarked Anadol. “Especially LG Display’s Transparent OLED, is a very exciting medium because you can really see through the medium of data like a holographic experience while you are interacting with an AI.”
Anadol adapted the transparent OLED technology to visualize data such as telemetry, ultrasound, and heartbeats into an aesthetic masterpiece, the company said. This work was Anadol’s second time collaborating with LG Display, following his “Machine Hallucinations: Nature Dreams” exhibit that used a transparent OLED display to present imagery based on real-time environmental data.
The Transparent OLED’s self-emissive nature allows it to provide clear images, slim designs and a transparency rate high enough to seamlessly replace glass windows.
LG Display is the only manufacturer of transparent OLED displays in the world. In addition to digital art, the company has employed the innovative technology across several areas and therefore can now be experienced in shopping malls, public transportation and interior designs.
The company said it is planning to present various transparent OLED-based interactive digital art throughout the year, including major art exhibitions held in North America, Europe and the rest of the world.
“We will continue innovating solutions that provide completely unique customer experiences with infinite scalability by harnessing the power of our one-of-a-kind Transparent OLED technology,” said Jin Min-kyu, Head of Life Display Promotion Division at LG Display.
In related news, Korean technology trade publication The Elec reported that a plan for Samsung to purchase WOLED TV panels from LG Display for a potential new line of Samsung-branded WOLED TVs this year won’t be happening in 2022. The report cited Samsung’s reluctance to add the technology to its already broad TV portfolio in light of declining global TV demand that has resulted from compounding economic and logistics issues following the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine War.
