LG Display, the display panel manufacturing arm of LG, used CES 2021 to announce the expansion of its OLED panel offerings, including new 42- and 83-inch screen sizes.

The company, which makes OLED panels for major OLED TV suppliers including LG Electronics, Sony, Skyworth, Vizio and others, officially announced the new 83-inch large 4K OLED screen size, which was part of 2021 product introductions for LG and Sony at the show.

The company said that later this year it will also start producing a smaller 42-inch screen size OLED TV panel, in part for applications highlighting desktop gaming, where smaller screen sizes are better suited to lean-forward experiences. No TV makers at CES 2021 had announced plans to use the 42-inch version yet.

Other new OLED panel announcements included: “a 48-inch bendable CSO TV display that utilizes a paper-thin screen that bends and unfolds with a curvature radius of up to 1,000R, meaning that it can be made to bend up to a radius of 1,000mm without affecting the function of the display.”

LGD said the 48-inch panel can be turned into a flat screen while watching TV or used as a curved screen while gaming. The curved display offers a uniform viewing distance from the middle of the screen to its edge, maximizing the visual immersion that is popular among gamers.

The announcement said CSO technology also enables OLED displays to vibrate and make their own sound without the use of any speakers, by instead using a new ultra slim film exciter that vibrates the display, has been reduced to a thickness of just 0.6mm from 9mm to allow a thinner screen with impressive sound.

The panel response time is 0.1 milliseconds (ms) with a refresh rate of 120Hz per second, and a wide variable refresh rate range from 40Hz to 120Hz, LGD said.

LG Display said it is also planning to expand its mid-range TV display lineup with screen sizes down to 20-30 inches for applications including TVs, gaming, mobility, and personal display.

The company is also working on a “next-generation” OLED panel with 20% higher efficiency.”

“LG Display’s new 77-inch OLED display shows significant progress in picture quality through newly developed and highly efficient materials as well as the addition of a layer to the display, thereby improving its efficiency by around 20%. Higher efficiency means that the display improves its brightness to realize more vivid images,” the company announced.

For commercial applications, LG Display showed a 55-inch Transparent OLED display designed to present signage information with clear image quality while benefiting from high transparency from both sides of the screen. A 23.1-inch in-TOUCH Stretch Display would have applications as a restaurant touch-screen restaurant menu through which orders could be placed.

LG Display said that it expects to produce 7 to 8 million OLED panels in 2021, up from around 4.5 million in 2020.
