As competitors like Sony, Samsung and Vizio start to stack up new and improved full-array LED back-lit 4K Ultra HD LCD TVs, LG’s LG Display unit continues to ramp up production of 65-inch 4K Ultra HD OLED panels for the global market.

According to data confirmed for HD Guru by market research firm IHS, LG Display began significantly ramping up supply of 65-inch OLED panels during the second quarter of this year.

Paul Gagnon, IHS North American TV market analyst, said his firm is projecting  110,000 units in the period, up from about 30,000 units in the first quarter.

In addition to making panels for its own LG Electronics sales and marketing companies around the world, “LGD is supplying OLED panels for TV application to Changhong, Konka, Panasonic and Skyworth,” Gagnon confirmed. “Skyworth also controls the Metz brand in Europe now, but the volume is small.”

As for the compound annual growth rate, IHS is forecasting a global rate for OLED production from 2016 to 2020 of 48 percent (rising from 830,000 to 5.8 million units).

“In North America, we see the market growing at a 55 percent CAGR over the same time frame,” Gagnon observed. “The preference for larger sizes helps, but there is certainly some risk to that outlook now that it seems Sony and Samsung are both looking away from OLED, at least for the moment.”
