LG Display, the display panel manufacturing arm of LG Electronics, has signed a three-year strategic partnership with Walt Disney Studios’ StudioLAB to provide it with organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV panels for content production tools and other projects, the company announced on Wednesday.
According to the announcement, the deal involves Ultra HDTV display panels developed and manufactured by LG Display for StudioLAB. The announcement called out a range of products, including previously shown transparent OLED panels that allow viewers to see through the display while seeing graphics in an augmented reality-style experience.
Disney’s StudioLAB is a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios focused on researching innovative new technologies for filmmaking.
“LG Display will provide StudioLAB access to the latest advancements in OLED technology,” LGD’s statement said. “Together, they will work on a variety of projects to equip Walt Disney Studios filmmakers with new production tools and provide consumers with fun, interactive and immersive experiences tied to the Studios’ film releases.”
Walt Disney Studios includes major content production units including: Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Twentieth Century Studios and Blue Sky Studios.

LG Display has already supplied Marvel Studios with 88-inch 8K OLED TVs that are being used in late-stage film editing where precise color expression plays a substantial role in producing the final product.
“The OLED suite of products provides us with the picture quality that we need to ensure the best viewing experience possible for our filmmakers and our fans,” stated Eddie Drake, Marvel Studios’ technology head. “Whether we are evaluating contrast and color accuracy or testing extreme viewing angles, OLED displays have demonstrated why their exceptional picture quality is in a league of its own, and we look forward to seeing how OLED technology advances for years to come.”
“This new innovation partnership reiterates our commitment to providing the best display capabilities,” stated Oh Chang-ho, executive vice president and head of the TV business unit at LG Display… “Given that OLED provides an incredible experience not just for viewing content but for creative production and exhibition as well, we’re hopeful this innovation partnership will help showcase the exceptional qualities of OLED to content creators and consumers around the world, delivering a powerful experience while pushing OLED technology to the next level.”
LG Display is the world’s primary manufacturer of large-format OLED panels used for television sets. OLED technology enables individual control of light at the pixel level, enabling each one to be turned off and on as needed to produce bright highlights and pure black. This control is seen by some content producers and post-production specialists as one of the best means of reproducing their artistic intent in the home.
