LG Electronics announced this week that it is taking Samusung’s FreeStyle portable projector head on with the introduction of its CineBeam PU700R take-anywhere portable 4K HDR (pixel-shifted) DLP projector.
But where the FreeStyle projector is limited to Full HD 1080p resolution, LG said the CineBeam PU700R is capable of casting up to a 120-inch screen on wall surfaces with (pixel-shifted DLP) 4K resolution with support for the HDR10 high dynamic range profile with Dynamic Tone Mapping as well as HLG live-broadcast HDR and the HGiG gaming standard.
The LG CineBeam PU700R, which carries a $1,699 suggested retail price, is driven by an LED laser light source and will achieve a peak brightness level of up to 1,000 lumens (approxiately 292 nits). The LED light engine has a 30,000 hours life expectancy rating. In comparison, the Samsung FreeStyle tops out at about 230 nits of peak luminance.
The LG CineBeam PU700R can be quickly positioned for a variety of projection angles. It comes with a stand that allows the projector to pivot 90 degrees and features an Auto Screen Adjustment function to automatically correct image to fit the projection surface.
The stand comes with a LED to help position the projector in dim conditions and can change colors to set a mood. LG said the unit comes with a variety of stylish images and seven colorful Mood Lighting options.
For smart TV functionality, the PU700R features the company’s webOS platform built in, providing immediate access to a wide range of popular streaming service apps to make movie night under the stars even easier.
For connectivity convenience, the LG CineBeam PU700R includes Android Screen Share and Apple AirPlay 2 screen sharing. Inputs include USB type A and USB type C ports and an HDMI 2.1 port to hook up a video game console or Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Nicely, the lone HDMI2.1 support ALLM, Audio Return Channel, up to 24 Gbps throughput and support for 10-bit 4:4:4 color (meaning it should be good for text-based computer content as well as video).
Users can also pair wireless audio devices like speakers, headphones or some soundbars via Bluetooth Dual Sound Output.
