Japan-based OLED display technology development firm Japan OLED (JOLED) Inc. and China-based TV display panel manufacturer TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) have teamed up to jointly develop OLED panel manufacturing for big-screen TVs based on ink-jet printing technology, the companies announced Thursday.
Under the alliance, JOLED will raise $187 million (JPY20 billion) in capital through a third-party allocation of new shares underwritten by CSOT-JAPAN. JOLED will then bring its proprietary printed OLED manufacturing technology and will start joint-development of large-sized OLEDs for TV applications together with TCL CSOT, according to the announcement.
Since its inception in 2015, JOLED has been carrying out research and development of printed OLED, the company said. The technique is expected to enable more efficient production of OLED TVs potentially improving performance and reducing cost.
TCL CSOT started shipping medium-sized OLEDs used for medical monitors in 2017. JOLED said it will now prove the adaptability and effectiveness of the printing technology for large-sized displays such as television sets through the cooperative effort with TCL CSOT off-shoot CSOT-JAPAN.

TCL CSOT is engaged in the development of semiconductor display technologies and materials, and has invested nearly $30 billion in display manufacturing covering Gen 6 to Gen 11 LCD, LTPS and OLED fabs in China and India. TCL CSOT said it is one of the top two panel manufacturers globally of both TV and mobile phones.
TCL CSOT is the display panel production arm of giant Chinese electronics manufacturing company TCL. TCL CSOT, which now rivals South Korean giants Samsung and LG in world display production, said it continues to expand its involvement in the development and commercialization of new and innovative display technologies and production techniques including ink-jet printing, mini-/micro-LED, Quantum Dot, EL-QLED, and flexible and rollable displays.
