As NextGen TV broadcast signals are ramping up transmissions around the country, with the latest markets available to reference at watchnextgentv.com.
NextGen TV broadcasts are based on a hybrid system of over-the-air and IP-delivered data, enabling a range of advanced feature capabilities including support for up to 4K resolution, HDR, interactive capabilities, emergency broadcast transmissions, conditional access for premium content delivery, more immersive 3D audio surround sound formats, among many other things. Exactly which features a TV station chooses to transmit and when is up to the station owner to determine (it’s all voluntary at this point) and each station is allowed to switch its ATSC 3.0 signal on as the market and demand permits.
Pearl points out that a study it commissioned in conjunction with Dolby earlier this year from Magid Research revealed that consumer awareness of NextGen TV ATSC 3.0 has now reached some 40% of U.S. residents, up 25% from a year ago, in markets where such signals are available.
“Contributing to that awareness are new additional resources that consumers can use to see if NextGen TV is on air in their city, an e-commerce page where consumers can research models for purchase, and view an informative video of the `Johnson Family,’ ” Pearl TV’s announcements said.
Peal said that ATSC 3.0 NextGen TV stations are now broadcasting in more than 50 markets across the country, reaching about half of the U.S. population. According to the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), 4.5 million NextGen TV-ready units are projected to be sold in 2022, up from 3 million units that were shipped in 2021.
