In an effort to eliminate confusion in the purchase of the latest HDMI cables, capable of supporting some or all of the latest features in the various flavors of the HDMI 2.1/HDMI 2.1a spec., the HDMI LA organization is taking steps to help shoppers verify authentically tested and certified HDMI cables.
The new “web-based cable and adopter verification solution” implemented by the HDMI LA (the licensing arm of HDMI technologies) will help give consumers clarity in identifying which cables have undergone the proper testing and certification for the claimed level of support, and which brands/products to avoid.
This should help a cable purchaser select products that are authentic and certified for compliance testing to support all of the latest and greatest features represented by the official High Speed and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable labeling, said Brad Bramy, HDMI Licensing Administrator marketing and ops VP.
Under the program, consumers purchasing an HDMI cable online or in-stores are urged to look for the official HDMI label showing the level of capability the item has been tested and certified to support. By clicking on the online label link or scanning a supporting QR code, consumers will be taken to the HDMI LA provided web site where a full explanation of the available features the product certification addresses can be found, while getting assurance the product will work with all certified HDMI products as advertised.

The HDMI LA expects this will help to combat the long, on-going problem of consumers getting hoodwinked into buying improperly or illicitly sold and advertised cheap HDMI cables that don’t support all features or fail to work at all with certified components.

These fraudulent or sub-standard products are sometimes found posted online by their own or dealers’ e-commerce sites, where the products are represented as supporting certain HDMI features (like “8K” or advanced speeds) that their cables were never officially tested for. In some cases, the no-name or little-known-name cable brands will go so far as to show counterfeit certification labels on their products.
Dealers posting these live label links and certification logos or corresponding QR/bar codes on their e-commerce site and/or physical in-store product signage and packaging will help to eliminate dissatisfied customers and reduce the volume of product returns and potential lost future business, Bramy assured.
Keep in mind that not all HDMI cables — even certified authentic HDMI cables — offer the same level of support. There are High Speed HDMI cables and Ultra High Speed HDMI cables. Only the latter will support the very latest and most advanced new features like 4K/120Hz, 8K/60Hz ultra high speeds with VRR and other advanced picture and sound qualities.
The linked official HDMI LA certification labels will begin to appear on e-commerce sites and on retail products sold physically in stores shortly, if they aren’t already there.
