In the on-going battle for smart TV OS platform market share supremacy, Google revealed last week that its Android TV ecosystem (including models running Google TV) now provides access to more than 10,000 dedicated streaming apps.
The claim was made during the Google I/O 2022 developers conference, as reported by 9to5Google. Android TV’s app count milestone is up from the 7,000 apps Google last claimed in 2020.
Enlisting 10,000 dedicated apps comes as a shot over the bow of sorts to rival OS platforms, though still inferior to the claimed libraries offered by most of those competitors.
Roku, for example, which by nature of its longtime neutral status in the intensifying premium streaming service space, has managed to amass three times that total.
The Apple tvOS app library numbers are believed to be nearly double the size of the Android TV 10K stable, and Amazon FireTV, which is based on the Android TV OS, is believed to have more than 15,500 apps, according to estimates by research website 42matters, as widely reported.
Meanwhile, both Samsung’s Tizen and LG’s webOS platforms have been expanding their app library counts, particularly with alternative ad-supported free streaming content.

Worthy of note, each of the apps for the Android TV platform have been updated and optimized to address streaming on big-screen displays and are not mere extensions of the Android mobile platform. The apps also apply to not only Android TVs and Google TVs, but streaming media players that run on those OS platform/GUIs as well.
Although those apps cover a large percentage of available movie and TV program streaming services (both free and premium), they also include other activities and services including exercise instructions, basic video game streaming, and streaming music of various genres, resolutions and cultures.
Google is aggressively pursuing the expansion of its niche advantage in online game streaming via its Stadia cloud gaming service.
Meanwhile, during the Google I/O presentation, the company said the combined Android TV/Google TV user bases account for some 110 million active devices, up by 30 million since 2020.
Google also indicated it is working with more than 300 partners globally, including 170 pay TV provider companies.
