Funai introduced Wednesday its first Philips-branded 4K Ultra HD LED-LCD TV series incorporating both the Android TV smart TV platform and built-in Google Assistant AI voice control

The Philips 4K Android TVs, which will be presented at next week’s CES 2019 in its Renaissance Hotel showroom, will be offered in the United States in two model series (5704 and 5904) and with five screen sizes including 43, 50, 55, 65, and 75 inches. An entry 43-inch screen size model will be priced at a $349.99 suggested retail, the company said. Other prices were not available.

Funai will continue to support other smart TV operating platforms–like Roku TVs–under other licensed brands, which will also be presented at CES 2019.

For the U.S. market, the new Philips-branded TVs, like other Philips-branded 4K Ultra HDTVs sold around the world through a license to TPV, will leverage the Android TV OS 8.0 OS and will provide access to a wide range of popular streaming channels. For the first time in a U.S. Philips TV, they will also incorporate Google Assistant voice-control AI built in, and will be able to make personalized recommendations from included streaming apps including Netflix, VUDU, YouTube, HULU, Sling TV, YouTube TV and Google Play Games.

Both the 5704 and 5904 models will be equipped with a Bluetooth near-field mic remote for voice control through the Google Assistant platform. In addition to searching for program titles, the AI platform will allow users to ask every day questions and control smart devices, such as the Philips Hue Play, Nest thermostat and other compatible products. Android TV also supports built-in Chromecast, enabling users to wirelessly mirror photos, movies, apps and more directly from their smartphones and mobile devices.

“Combining Funai’s innovative display technology with the Android TV platform gives users a new central hub for their home and provides endless entertainment options for all viewers,” said Youssef Ibrahim, Funai senior product marketing manager. “The new series not only gives users instant access to their favorite entertainment programs in 4K, it can also control smart lights, thermostats, cameras, and more, regardless of which room they are in; providing unprecedented convergence between television, entertainment and multi-zone connected home control.”

The Philips 4K UHD Android TV 5704 series features HDR10 support and is equipped with Bright Pro, a backlight booster that brightens the image up to 10% compared to standard LED displays, delivering what the company said is “exceptional brightness and contrast even in brightly lit rooms,.”

Funai said the Philips 4K Android TV 5704 series is now available through select retailers and warehouse clubs.

The 5904 series will be available in the second half of 2019, bringing “an integrated far-field microphone solution allowing users to simply say, `Hey Google,’ to activate a personal Google Assistant and ask questions, control other smart home devices and add products to their Google Express cart from anywhere in the room.”

Connectivity options in both series include HDMI, antenna RF, Wireless 802.11ac dual-band MIMO, Ethernet, and USB multimedia player. Audio options include digital optical and Bluetooth 4.2 for optional use with headphones, keyboards or other BT wireless accessories.
