LG Electronics announced late Monday that it is now the first TV manufacturer to offer support for Dolby Vision HDR at 120Hz for advanced gaming systems.

LG said the addition of the highly anticipated capability by advanced video gamers “reaffirms its commitment to providing the best big-screen gaming experience.”

According to the announcement, the additional support is enabled in the new firmware version 03.15.27, which is now rolling out to LG C1 and G1 series 4K OLED TVs. Once installed those models will become “first in the world” supporting the latest Dolby Vision capability.

“Additional premium models in LG’s 2021 TV lineup such as OLED Z1 series, QNED Mini LED QNED99 series and NanoCell NANO99 series TVs will also receive the update in July,” LG’s statement said, adding that further model series from the 2021 and 2020 lines “are also being tested for Dolby Vision gaming in either 60Hz or 120Hz” frame rates.

Thus far, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S gaming consoles support Dolby Vision 120Hz gaming, but Sony’s PlayStation 5 does not at this time support it.

The new firmware update also introduces in all 2021 LG TVs equipped with Game Optimizer, a new Game Dashboard, which LG describes as “a floating onscreen menu similar to the head-up display (HUD) found in many games. The feature lets users quickly see the TV’s settings and allows them to switch between different genres – Standard, FPS, RPG or RTS – without pausing the action.”

The dashboard also shows the activation status of other modes including black stabilizer, low latency and variable refresh rate (VRR). To access more options, users can launch the Game Optimizer directly from the Game Dashboard.

Other tweaks available in the update include: certain webOS 6.0 performance improvements, and the ability to have both AMD FreeSync and Dolby Vision enabled at the same time on the C1 and G1 models.

LG said its 2021 OLED TVs “boast features that make games of any genre look incredibly smooth and play fast. With minimal lag, they’re able to deliver amazing gameplay with a level of responsiveness that can help users climb to the top of the leaderboards in their favorite next-gen console and PC challenges.”
