DirecTV officially announced its new hybrid OTT-media-streamer and 4K UHD satellite set-top box, called “Gemini.”

The set-top box, which will be available initially for new satellite TV subscribers only, will implement Android TV functionality with a Google Assistant voice remote and features a wireless connection to a Wi-Fi network or alternatively can be connected to a wired Ethernet network.

The pay-TV provider said the Gemini receiver will receive and display 4K UHD programming when connected to an HDTV. The set-top will also be able to select OTT streaming apps to add to the device via the Google Play Store.

The Gemini receiver can also be used to connect to remote room televisions using existing Genie 2 thin-client boxes.

In related news, DirecTV is promoting the satellite service and Gemini boxes through a new TV commercial featuring actor Brian Cox, star of the HBO series “Succession,” as its pitchman.

As reported yesterday, the pay-TV provider is also reportedly moving forward with an Android TV media streaming dongle called “Gemini Air” for new DirecTV Stream customers, who don’t already have an alternative media streaming device or supporting smart TV.

It is also dropping the “Stream” from the internet-based platform brand to just DirecTV, like the satellite-based service. Exiting DirecTV Stream customers will continue to use their own streaming dongles or the original DirecTV Stream box (originally known as Osprey). However, the streaming app will get a new-look DirecTV user interface that resembles the one on the satellite service box.

DirecTV “Gemini Air” hasn’t been formally announced by the company yet, and pricing hasn’t been announced.
