Sound United, parent company to Denon, Polk Audio, Marantz, Definitive Technology, Classé, and Boston Acoustics, is teaming up with digital music distribution/management service Roon to bring Roon Tested Accreditation to 68 Denon and Marantz AVRs, amps, preamps, SACD/CD players and other devices enabling seamless easy-to-use streaming of locally stored and online music using Roon servers or Roon Core devices.
Roon Tested’ accreditation means that a specified A/V receiver or similar device is automatically configured to perform within the Roon ecosystem, and applicable products will carry an icon within the signal path selector. The capability will enable listeners to easily stream music from a Roon Core (Mac, Windows PC and Linux systems with Roon app installed, or a Roon Server device) to the A/V receiver or supporting device.

In a joint announcement, the companies said the applicable Marantz and Denon devices will leverage the Roon platform to provide extensive song data with rich listings and categorization that provides accurate genres, lyrics, artists’ concert/tour dates, artwork, and other pertinent information to expand the user experience through their music libraries. The newly enabled and tested Roon devices from Denon and Marantz will be able at tap into local digital music files and high-resolution streaming services like TIDAL and Qobuz, to generate a cross-platform networked music ecosystem equipped with server apps for Roon Nucleus, Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Control is managed via apps for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, with networked audio output capability to any Roon Ready, Roon Tested, AirPlay, Chromecast, Mac, Windows, iOS, or Android device on the network, the companies said.
“A critical aspect of the listening experience is learning more about your favorite artists, songwriters and bands. It makes the music more intimate and alive,” stated Brendon Stead, senior vice president of product development at Sound United. “In the past this intimacy was delivered by the record or CD covers and has been missing from digital online music. Roon helped pioneer this type of experience in the world of streaming music. We’re very excited Denon and Marantz is now Roon Tested so our enthusiastic listeners can continue discovering more about the music they love.”
Another benefit to the Roon interface is how it integrates and lists streamed music using the TIDAL and Qobuz streaming services. Denon and Marantz users can enjoy their personal content libraries seamlessly merged with their high-resolution streaming favorites so searches and playlists will include content from both sources.
The Sound United announcement follows a similar announcements including Onkyo & Pioneer’s fall 2019 announcement that select Onkyo brand receivers are also Roon Tested.
The interface can be controlled from Roon’s app on any device, including a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet. A subscription to Roon runs you about $119 for a year. In order to store the actual music files library, users will need either a PC with above average storage capacity (4GB of RAM); a Network Attached Storage (NAS) Device (4GB of RAM and an SSD); or a dedicated server (no monitor). Roon can play standard file formats including WAV, FLAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD and PCM files up to 24 bit/384 kHz (AIFF and WAV up to 32 bit/384 kHz), and DSD up to 256. Gapless playback is also supported.
