DEG Moves To Standardize Digital Streaming Industry
The multi-industry Digital Entertainment Group’s (DEG) Direct to Consumer (D2C) Alliance Steering Committee announced Thursday a list of new industry terminology chosen to help standardize communication about the different digital streaming models and services now exploding in the market.
The group said the terms are also being advocated “to align the messaging regarding their features and benefits.”
The terms span linear, transactional and subscription audio/video entertainment business platforms.
The mission of the DEG D2C Alliance is to identify “the issues pertaining to both Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) and Advertising-supported Video on Demand based (AVOD) business models. The body said this includes definitions and standards; uniform messaging; activation and adoption; research and data analytics; consumer consumption patterns; improved quality of service; and generating greater overall awareness about the direct-to-consumer experience.
The Alliance also recently formed two new committees: “TV & Connected Devices” and “DTC Targeted Services.”
Members of the TV & Connected Devices committee include representatives from Amazon, Google, LG Electronics, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony Electronics, TiVo, Verizon and Xfinity.
According to the announcement, this committee will provide “open communication with platforms and services as a way to improve the overall consumer streaming experience.”
The DTC Targeted Services committee is comprised of key representatives from specialized content companies including: A+E Networks, AMC Networks, BBC Studios, FilmRise, National Geographic, The Great Courses, PBS Distribution and ScreenHits TV.
“The goal of the DTC Targeted Services committee is to ensure that the perspective of specialized services is represented in the key industry issues outlined above,” according to the DEG statement.
The DEG D2C Alliance is guided by a group Steering Committee executives, including Matt Strauss, Chairman Direct-to-Consumer and International at NBCUniversal, chair; Ron Lamprecht, Director Corporate Business Development at Amazon Prime, Vice Chair; and Jonathan Zepp, M&E Global Partnerships, Google Platforms & Ecosystems, and Dan Cohen, President, ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group, as Board Officers.
The officers were elected by the full D2C Alliance Steering Committee, which includes representatives from virtually every major direct-to-consumer provider.
“Establishing accepted industry terminology is an important early step in both industry relations and consumer outreach,” said Amy Jo Smith, DEG President and CEO. “This is an important milestone for the D2C Alliance as it moves forward with a strong base of support across platforms and services, device makers and content owners and distributors.”
The D2C Alliance is conducting a virtual DEG Expo event starting at 1:30pm EST Thursday (today) on the Maturing D2C Landscape. The event will include selected industry speakers to discuss the evolving targeted services field and the role connected devices play in the consumer experience.
Speakers will include: Susan Agliata, Director of Business Development, OTT Partnerships, Samsung; Lucas Bertrand, CEO, Looper Insights; John Buffone, Executive Director, Industry Analyst – Connected Intelligence, The NPD Group; Andrea Downing, Co-President, PBS Distribution; Ben Maughan, VP New Ventures and Strategic Business Development, TiVo (Xperi); Josh Reader, President Distribution & Development, AMC Networks; and Kevin Westcott, Vice Chairman – National TMT Leader, Deloitte.
