Canon introduced Monday the new flagship model in its PowerShot G-series premium compact camera series, featuring a 24.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and the company’s new Dual Pixel CMOS auto-focus (AF) technology.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III, which will hit retail in November at a $1,299 expected street price, features a lightweight and portable body design loaded with advanced features for a point-&-shot camera model. It is billed as the first Canon G-Series model to use a high megapixel APS-C type CMOS sensor, and the first to use the new Dual Pixel AF circuitry.

For video enthusiasts, the G1 X Mark III will capture up to Full HD 1080/60p resolution and has the ability to leverage the camera’s high ISO speed shooting range for smooth accurate focus from the Dual Pixel AF technology. Video is also stabilized with a 5-axis movie IS function that helps reduce the effect of camera shake in handheld situations.

The camera will enable video shooters to easily capture Time-Lapse Movies with intuitive settings that determine intervals and exposure.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III offers advancements from the previous G-Series flagship (the PowerShot G1X Mark II) including the addition of the larger 24.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, which is the same size used by many D-SLRs.

The larger sensor size delivers higher quality pixel resolution for both stills and video.

In addition, the new APS-C imaging chip combines with the camera’s wide-angle 24-72mm (3x zoom) lens with Optical Image Stabilization and f/2.8-5.6 aperture for maximum brightness in dim shooting conditions. The camera will also push low-light ability farther with an ISO range of 100-25,600 that helps preserve soft-background bokeh effect.

Canon’s inclusion of its Dual Pixel CMOS AF system ensures fast and smooth autofocus capabilities across most of the focal plane, allowing for more creative compositions when framing a subject away from the center of a shot.

Other features include a dust- and water-resistant body construction, a 2.36 million dot Organic LED Electronic Viewfinder, “Touch & Drag AF” linking the EVF and touch panel monitor to adjust Smooth Zone AF targeting without looking away from the viewfinder. The camera’s 3.0 inch Vari-angle Touch LCD Monitor expands the shooting postions possible with the camera.
