Bose introduced this week its first soundbar supporting Dolby Atmos surround sound to go up against the popular Sonos Arc.

The Bose Smart Soundbar 900 will hit retail shelves on September 23 at an $899 suggested retail price supporting traditional object-based Dolby Atmos with built-in upfiring speakers and the company’s proprietary PhaseGuide technology that is said to better position audio in the home theater environment.

The Bose soundbar does not list support for DTS.

The Bose soundbar, which is being released in the same time frame as Sony’s just revealed and similarly configured A5000 Dolby Atmos soundbar, will be sold as an all-in-one solution, though purchasers will have the option to add on the company’s wireless rear-channel speakers ($499) and/or “bass module” subwoofer ($699) for more convincing realism and dynamic directional effects.

The Soundbar 900 will also work with Bose multi-room wireless speakers and its upcoming Bose QuietComfort 45 headphones, the company said.

The Soundbar 900 will “precisely” position distinct sound to the right and left of the listener to create a large, detailed soundstage.

Absent Dolby Atmos content the Bose Soundbar 900 can trigger the company’s proprietary TrueSpace technology to create a horizontal soundstage while creating virtual height channels.

For its “smart” functionality, the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 incorporates Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as support for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for voice control. Also features is built-in support for Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, and interoperability with all other Bose smart speakers.

The company said the Soundbar 900 will support HDMI ports including support for eARC when used with compatible TVs.
