Best Buy corporate communications responded to HD Guru’s “Hack†post involving a Texan’s phone number and address appearing as the “ship to” information in his Best Buy password protected on-line account (link).
According to the Best Buy spokesperson, the information had been altered during a 2009 system test at the behest of HD Guru but due to a phone representative’s error had not been switched back to the correct information.
The spokesman said Best Buy’s investigation revealed this had occurred back in 2009 when I had a problem ordering a laptop for home delivery.
This would be completely plausible, if I had indeed order a laptop for home delivery from Best Buy in 2009.
However, I have never ordered a laptop or any item ever for home delivery from Best Buy, so the hacking issue remains open.

I recall this issue from 2009. Best Buy Reward Zone customer representatives informed me that they had updated their database, and a glitch caused the crossing of personal information between different accounts. I first noticed the issue when I went to use my Reward Zone membership and saw that my email looked different and I asked them to change it (I clicked “not correct” on the signature screen). When I went back a few weeks later, I saw the email was not been updated, though I remember watching it being updated by the cashier’s computer. Later on, I tried printing my Reward Zone money, but the website would not recognize my password. I had to call in on multiple occasions to have someone understand the situation. It took approximately six months in total until I found someone who was able to fix the problem. They were able to confirm all my information by comparing my purchasing history and all my recently delivered items. They also found that I had more than one reward zone account, and were able to consolidate them into the oldest. It is unfortunate that they are keeping customers in the dark about the truth. Honesty and transparency is what they need to provide customers.
Knowing how insecure your personal information is at Best Buy/Retail Equation, just try to cancel your “Reward†Zone account. I found it impossible even after calling twice. I asked for all my personal information to be deleted from their insecure system.
Then they sent me new cards! Needless to say I did not authorize them. I guess they want their membership numbers to stay up even they are declining.
