Samsung JS9500 580

The future of next-generation 4K Ultra HD TV, including the use of 4K UHD high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut (WCG) content, will be on display in a rare 4K UHD TV shootout scheduled for Thursday, June 25, 2015 as part of the events of CE Week at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W 18th St, New York, NY 10011.

The public shootout session, which is being arranged by Scarsdale, N.Y.-based A/V electronics boutique Value Electronics, will pit against each other four 2015 top-performing models, Panasonic’s TC-65CX850U, LG’s 65EG9600, Samsung’s UN78JS9500 (pictured at top) and Sony’s XBR75X940C.

More on the Value Electronics 4K UHD TV Shootout after the jump:

The four TVs will be judged on picture quality, including such attributes as contrast ratio, peak brightness, black level, color accuracy, color saturation, motion resolution, lag input time, and energy efficiency. LG will present the lone 4K UHD OLED contender, while the others will use 4K LED-panels with brightness- and color-boosting techniques including enhanced phosphor layers and/or nanocrystal (aka quantum dot) technology.

All models either include or will be updated to include HDR- metadata-supporting features such as HDMI2.0a ports and the ability to recognize and display HDR information. All are also said to support a color gamut wider than ITU Rec.709, which is the current baseline standard for HDTVs and early generation 4K UHDTVs. A number of the test models have been cited by manufacturers as presenting 90 percent or better Digital Cinema Initiative P3 color space, which is used in professional digital cinemas.

The portion of the shootout that will be open to the general public will take place from 9:30-11 am and 1-2:30pm June 25, at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

Seating is provided for up to 50 people, and standing room will be limited, event organizers warn. Zohn said he is making arrangements to live stream the shootouts from the Value Electronics web site, bandwidth permitting.
